Aberlour Distillery, situated in the heart of Speyside, has a long history dating back to its founding in 1826. The distillery is renowned for producing high-quality single malt whiskies that showcase the character of the region.
How this product is made
Malted Barley: Aberlour 12 Year Old is made from 100% malted barley. The barley is soaked in water, germinated, and then dried in kilns to stop germination. This process converts the starches in the barley into fermentable sugars.
Milling and Mashing: The dried malted barley is ground into grist and mixed with hot water in the mash tun. This mashing process extracts the sugars from the grist, producing a sugary liquid called wort.
Fermentation: The wort is cooled and transferred to fermentation vessels where yeast is added. Yeast converts the sugars in the wort into alcohol during fermentation, producing a liquid known as “wash.”
Distillation: The wash is distilled twice in traditional copper pot stills. The double distillation helps refine the spirit and concentrate its flavors.
Maturation: After distillation, the spirit is filled into oak casks for aging. Aberlour 12 Year Old is matured in a combination of American oak ex-bourbon casks and sherry casks. The sherry casks contribute to the whisky’s characteristic fruity and spicy notes.
Ageing: Aberlour 12 Year Old is aged for a minimum of 12 years in the casks, allowing the whisky to develop its complexity and depth of flavor.
Blending: After aging, the whisky is carefully selected and blended to achieve the desired balance of flavors.
Bottling: The final blend is filtered and bottled at its optimal strength, ready for distribution.

Appearance: Aberlour 12 Year Old displays a warm amber color, reflecting its time spent in oak casks.
Nose: The aroma is inviting, with notes of ripe fruits, particularly apples and pears, complemented by hints of vanilla, toffee, and sherry spice.
Palate: On the palate, the whisky offers a smooth and velvety texture. Flavors of red berries, honey, cinnamon, and a touch of nuttiness develop, creating a well-rounded and harmonious taste experience.
Finish: The finish is medium to long, with a gentle warmth and lingering sweetness.
