Unlike Campari, Aperol is lower in alcohol and less aggressively bitter, with more orange-led sweetness and vanilla softness. That makes it a gentler entry point into Italian bitter aperitifs for adult customers comparing aperitivo styles in Kenya.

Tasting Notes

Orange zest and fresh citrus peel open the nose, followed by gentian-like bitterness, faint rhubarb, vanilla and herbal root notes. The palate begins with sweet orange before moving into bitter herbs and cinchona-like dryness; the texture is rounded without feeling heavy, and the low-alcohol profile keeps the structure lighter than Campari. The finish leaves orange peel, vanilla, bitter herb and a soft medicinal edge that holds briefly before fading into a clean aperitivo bitterness.

Food Pairing

Light salty snacks, olives, crisps, cured meats and citrus-led canapés sit naturally beside Aperol’s orange-bitterness. In a Nairobi setting, it fits adult sundowners, light pre-dinner gatherings and warm-weather balcony serves where a lower-ABV aperitivo is preferred. Aperitivo liqueurs are traditionally served before dinner to open the appetite rather than after meals.

Description

Aperol is an Italian aperitivo with orange zest, herbal bitterness, vanilla notes and a low 11% ABV profile.

Bright orange colour and gentle bitterness define Aperol’s role in Italian aperitivo culture. Created in Padua in 1919 by Luigi and Silvio Barbieri, Aperol has kept its original secret recipe centred on orange, herbs and roots. Iit sits lower in alcohol than many bitter aperitifs, which gives it a lighter profile in spritz-style serves. Best suited for individuals comparing aperitivo options, it works for warm-weather gatherings, pre-dinner serves and lighter cocktail occasions.

About The Distillery

Aperol was introduced in 1919 at the Padua International Fair by brothers Luigi and Silvio Barbieri. The brand’s defining idea was a lighter aperitivo built around orange, herbal bitterness and lower alcohol. Its rise accelerated in the 1950s, when the Aperol Spritz became closely associated with Italian aperitivo culture. Today, Aperol is part of Campari Group and remains closely linked to the spritz serve.
