Unlike Beyerskloof’s Kriekbult or Reserve Pinotage, both built around older single-vineyard fruit and longer barrel programmes, this is the accessible, everyday version of the same house style. It carries the estate’s fruit-forward signature without the price tag or the ageing commitment those bottles ask for. For buyers in Kenya wanting to understand what Pinotage actually tastes like before spending more on a premium expression, this is the natural starting point at The Wine Box Kenya, and it comes from the producer most responsible for putting the grape on the map in the first place.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby in the glass, bright rather than inky. The nose is immediate and generous, red berries and ripe plum leading, with cherry sitting just behind them. A little cedar and toasted oak comes through from the barrel time, along with a faint mocha note that adds warmth without weight. On the palate the entry is soft, the tannins gentle rather than gripping, which is what nineteen months in mostly older oak tends to do. Plum and berry fruit carry through the mid-palate with good concentration for a wine at this level, framed by a light spice that keeps things interesting rather than simple. The finish is crisp and refreshing, closing clean without any bitterness. This is Pinotage built for drinking rather than analysing, and it does that job well.

Food Pairing

This is a straightforward grilling wine. Fried or grilled red meat is the classic match, and it holds up just as well against Middle Eastern dishes where spice and char both come into play. Mature cheddar or a good gouda works if you want something simpler, the wine’s fruit sitting comfortably against a firm, salty cheese. For a Nairobi weeknight where the plan is a quick braai or a simple grilled dinner rather than anything formal, this is the bottle that asks nothing of you beyond opening it.

What You Need to Know:

Is this the same as Beyerskloof’s more expensive Pinotage bottles?
No. This is the entry-level, everyday expression. Kriekbult and Reserve are built from older, single-vineyard fruit with longer oak ageing, which puts them in a different price and style bracket entirely.

Is this wine dry or does it have some sweetness?
Technically dry, though the ripe plum and berry character reads as generous rather than austere. There’s no noticeable sweetness on the finish, which closes crisp and clean.

How long can I keep this bottle before I need to drink it?
It’s made to be enjoyed young, ideally within 2 to 3 years of the vintage. This isn’t a wine built for long cellaring, and it’s at its best while the fruit is still vibrant.

What food works best with this bottle?
Fried or grilled red meat is the classic pairing. It also does well with Middle Eastern dishes, and a simple mature cheddar or gouda if you want something less involved.

What should I do if this bottle is out of stock?
Our customer service team can help you find a suitable alternative or source the product where possible.

Can I get Beyerskloof Pinotage delivered same day in Nairobi?
Nairobi orders placed before 9 PM qualify for same-day delivery, typically completed within a 1-hour window. Free delivery applies to orders above KES 3,000 within Nairobi. Orders outside Nairobi are delivered nationwide across Kenya within 24 to 48 hours.

Description

South Africa’s most popular Pinotage, from the winery that put the grape back on the map. Fruit-forward, ready to drink now, and available for same-day delivery through The Wine Box Kenya in Nairobi.

There’s a reason people call Beyerskloof the home of Pinotage. Beyers Truter founded the estate in 1988 with the specific goal of proving South Africa’s own grape could stand alongside anything else in the world, and this bottle is the everyday result of that thirty-plus-year project. It’s the wine most people mean when they say “Pinotage,” the version that shows up on more South African tables than any other.

What makes it work is consistency rather than complexity. The fruit comes from vines aged 15 to 20 years, old enough to give real character but young enough to keep yields generous, which is exactly what an everyday-drinking wine needs. Nineteen months in oak, mostly second-fill barrels, adds structure without ever pushing the fruit into the background. This is a wine built to be opened without ceremony, which is precisely why it’s the right choice for a Nairobi evening where the occasion is simply that people are gathered and there’s food on the table.

About The Winery

Beyers Truter founded Beyerskloof in 1988, leaving his post as winemaker at Kanonkop to build an estate focused entirely on Pinotage. He went on to become the first South African winemaker named Winemaker of the Year by the International Wine and Spirit Competition, a recognition credited with helping establish Pinotage as a serious international variety rather than a regional curiosity. The estate sits on 150 hectares in Stellenbosch, where warm days are tempered by cooling breezes off False Bay. Today his daughter Anri Truter leads winemaking, continuing a family focus that runs from this everyday bottling right through to the estate’s most ambitious single-vineyard wines.
