Tasting Notes
Pale straw with a gold glint. The nose opens with ripe peach and apricot, nectarine close behind, with a squeeze of lemon and a soft vanilla note from the barrel fermented portion. On the palate the entry is round and creamy, though acidity keeps the wine lively rather than heavy. Orchard fruit runs through the middle, and a trace of toasted French oak adds texture without taking over. The finish is soft and lingering, with citrus and stone fruit fading slowly. It tastes ripe and easy, with just enough structure to hold up to food.
Food Pairing
The creamy mid palate and ripe fruit suit richer white meat and mildly spiced food. Roast chicken, seared duck breast and creamy pasta all work, and so does grilled sole with lemon butter. A mildly spiced coconut fish curry, the kind found along the Kenyan coast, is a good match too, since the wine’s stone fruit softens the heat. Chicken salad with mango also pairs well. Most everyday Chenin Blanc is made entirely in stainless steel. This one splits the work. Fruit from the older vineyards goes into French oak barrels for fermentation, which adds body and a creamy edge, while the younger fruit stays crisp and bright. The two parts are blended back together, so the wine keeps its lift but carries more weight than a tank-only white at this price.
Bruce Jack describes the result as peaches and cream with a kiss of vanilla, and the barrel work explains the vanilla. About The Wienry
Bruce Jack grew up in Cape Town and studied winemaking at the University of Adelaide in the early 1990s. He founded Flagstone Winery in 1998, and when Constellation Brands bought it in 2008 he stayed on as winemaker. That role included rebuilding the Kumala brand to 32.5 million bottles a year. His own label launched in 2018 and now sells in over 20 countries. Every wine in the range is bottled under screwcap, from the Lifestyle Collection up to the single vineyard Heritage wines. The range is available through The Wine Box Kenya in Nairobi.
