Unlike Bruce Jack’s Lifestyle reds, which are made for easy drinking, this is The Drift’s estate red blend, aged 20 months in barrel. Food Pairing
The nose shows ripe blackberry, mulberry and plum, with garden herbs and fynbos florals above the fruit and white pepper and a touch of cigar box behind. On the palate the ripe fruit leads, with cherry and raspberry on top and dark chocolate underneath. The acidity is moderate, and the oak sits in support after 20 months in barrel. The finish carries the herbs and the darker fruit, and the wine stays balanced from start to end.
Food Pairing
Bruce Jack’s own pairings are hearty lamb stew, spicy bouillabaisse and slow baked aubergine with garlic and parsnip. They point to food with texture and spice, and the wine’s ripe fruit and herbal edge can handle it. A slow cooked lamb or goat stew is the closest local match, and a six month old cheddar with pickled relish also works. Serve at 16 to 18°C. Moveable Feast is named for how it is made. The estate says the blend changes slightly each year, depending on what is in the barrels and how they perform. The 2020 is built mostly on Syrah and Malbec, with Tannat, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Barbera and Tinta Barocca added for spice. The fruit came from selected vineyards in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Elim and the Overberg Highlands, and was processed cool at The Drift Estate.
Each vineyard was hand picked and destemmed into its own open top fermenter, then cold soaked for 6 to 10 days. Between 15% and 20% of the fruit stayed as whole clusters, and fermentation ran naturally for 5 to 7 days. The skins went into a traditional basket press after 10 to 14 days of maceration, and the wine spent 20 months in barrel before bottling in November 2021. JamesSuckling.com scored the 2020 at 90 points.

About The Winery
Bruce Jack founded Flagstone Winery in 1998 and launched his own label, Bruce Jack Wines, in 2018. That year he also turned to building the family estate, The Drift, near the village of Napier in the Overberg. He has said his plan was always to make this one wine, built mostly on Malbec and Shiraz because he knew they would suit the farm. He was named Winemaker of the Year twice by two separate South African organisations, and his wines sell in over 20 countries. The range is available through The Wine Box Kenya.
