Unlike a straightforward South African Pinotage, where the variety’s grippy tannins and occasional acetone character can be divisive, the 30% Malbec rounds the mid-palate and makes the blend significantly more approachable. Unlike a straightforward Malbec, the Pinotage adds a spicy, savoury dimension and a depth of fruit character that Argentine Malbec at this price point rarely produces. This is a blend that exists only in South Africa, using the country’s only indigenous variety alongside a global variety, in a pairing that is structurally logical rather than marketing-led. For buyers comparing South African red wines on The Wine Box shelf, this is the most distinctly local option in the Bruce Jack red range.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby with a purple edge, consistent with Pinotage’s naturally deep pigmentation. The nose is expressive and layered. Fresh Morello cherry and ripe black plum lead, followed by a thread of dark chocolate and a faint espresso note from the light oak contact. Behind those, Pinotage’s distinctive spice signature of black pepper, dried clove and a trace of dried herbs — adds a savoury dimension that Malbec alone does not produce. The nose is generous without being heavy. The palate entry is rounded. The Malbec contribution is most apparent here. A plush, fruit-forward quality that softens the grip of the Pinotage tannins and makes the wine approachable from the first pour. Black cherry and boysenberry carry through the mid-palate, framed by a trace of vanilla from the oak contact. The tannins are present but fine grained, dissolving quickly without a drying sensation. The acidity is moderate, keeping the fruit bright without making the wine feel lean. The finish is medium in length. Dark berry skin, dried pepper and a thread of cacao linger for 20 to 25 seconds. The 2025 vintage is slightly lighter in body than prior years due to the earlier harvest, which sharpens the fruit character and gives the finish more clarity.

Food Pairing

The spice and dark cherry profile of this blend points to roasted and chargrilled red meat as the primary pairing. Roast lamb with a rosemary crust, beef short rib and venison are the strongest structural matches. The Pinotage spice mirrors the seasoning of the meat directly. Chargrilled meats and those finished with teriyaki or plum-based sauces work particularly well alongside a glass. The wine’s dark fruit and spice complement the glaze without competing. Moderately spiced Asian dishes, including Thai-style preparations, sit naturally with the wine’s fruit weight and pepper character. For a Nairobi evening where the grill is the centrepiece and the food spans both red meat and lighter preparations, this bottle holds across the spread without demanding careful matching.

Description

South Africa’s most distinctly local red grape meets Argentina’s most planted variety. A Breedekloof Valley blend that is spicy, fruit-forward and built for a wide table. The 2025 vintage is the leanest and most precise expression of this wine to date.

Pinotage is a grape variety found nowhere else in the world at commercial scale. The Breedekloof Valley, where this wine’s fruit originates, is consistently identified as the region that produces the most decorated Pinotage in the country. The combination of warm days, cool nights and the valley’s specific soil profile produces Pinotage with more fruit intensity and less of the acetone and rubber characters that the variety is notorious for when grown on less suitable sites. The 30% Malbec cont

ribution is not decorative. Malbec adds a plush, rounded quality to the mid-palate that softens Pinotage’s naturally grippy tannins and deepens the dark fruit character with blackberry and plum notes. The result is a blend that is more approachable than a single-varietal Pinotage and more aromatic and spiced than a straightforward Malbec.

The 2025 vintage was picked earlier than prior years, a deliberate decision by Bruce Jack to manage ABV in light of revised duty frameworks. Bruce Jack confirmed in a January 2026 interview that Breedekloof Pinotage was among the standout wines he tasted from barrel that year. The ABV has dropped approximately one degree from the 14 to 14.5% of previous vintages. The result is a leaner, more precise wine with the same fruit intensity and a fresher finish. For buyers in Nairobi who want an approachable, food-ready red from a South African producer with 25 years of documented winemaking experience, this is the correct entry point into the Bruce Jack red range.
