The distillery was founded in 1869 by John Smith, who carefully selected its location near the confluence of the Rivers Cragganmore and Spey, ensuring access to pure and soft water for the whisky production. How this product is made 

Cragganmore 12 Year Old is made using traditional distillation techniques. The production process begins with the selection of high-quality malted barley, which is soaked in water to encourage germination. The germinated barley is then dried over peat fires, infusing a subtle smokiness into the whisky.

After drying, the barley is ground into a grist and mixed with hot water to extract sugars, creating a sugary liquid called “wort.” The wort is fermented with yeast in large wooden washbacks, where the sugars are converted into alcohol, resulting in a liquid known as “wash.””

The wash is then distilled twice in traditional copper pot stills. The first distillation separates the alcohol from the impurities, creating a liquid called “low wines.” The low wines are then distilled again in the spirit stills to produce a high-proof spirit known as “new make.”

The new make is aged for a minimum of 12 years in oak casks, which are often ex-bourbon barrels. During the maturation process, the whisky interacts with the wood, gaining flavors and characteristics from the oak. The long aging period contributes to the whisky’s complexity and depth of flavors.”
