Unlike modern Rioja producers who have shifted to French oak and shorter ageing, Cune maintains the traditional American oak regimen. Furthermore, the Crianza classification guarantees 18 months in barrel and 6 months in bottle. A legal standard that entry-level Rioja does not meet. As a result, this wine offers a level of structure and development that generic Spanish reds lack. For those comparing food-friendly reds in Nairobi, this Crianza delivers authentic Rioja character at a price point that competes with mass-market alternatives from the New World.

Tasting Notes
Bright ruby with a garnet rim. The nose is open and inviting. Initially, Morello cherry, strawberry jam and vanilla pod dominate the American oak signature is immediate. However, with 30 minutes in the decanter, dried fig, tobacco leaf and a faint coconut husk note emerge. Furthermore, a dusty earthiness and dried rose petal develop over time. On the palate, the wine is medium to full in weight. The tannins are fine-grained and supple, providing structure without aggression. Additionally, the acidity is moderate and refreshing, carrying flavours of red cherry, plum skin and clove through the mid-palate. The 18 months in American oak leave a trace of toasted vanilla and sweet spice on a finish of cherry pit and dried herb that persists for 35 seconds.
Food Pairing
At 13.5% ABV and with moderate tannin, this Crianza pairs with a wide range of dishes. Grilled lamb chops and chorizo stew are therefore the strongest matches — the vanilla and spice from American oak complement charred and smoked flavours. Additionally, beef empanadas, patatas bravas and aged Manchego work well at the table. The acidity cuts through fat cleanly, while the red fruit mirrors tomato-based sauces. For a Nairobi evening where the occasion calls for something versatile — a family dinner, a casual braai with Spanish influence, or a midweek gathering where one bottle must cover multiple dishes — this is the wine that holds across the full spread. Decant for 30 minutes before serving.
What you Need to know:
What does this Rioja taste like compared to Cabernet Sauvignon?
Tempranillo is lighter in body and tannin than Cabernet Sauvignon, with more red fruit and less blackcurrant. The 18 months in American oak add vanilla and coconut rather than the cedar and graphite of French oak. This wine is consequently more approachable and food-versatile.
What is the difference between Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva?
Crianza requires 18 months in barrel and 6 months in bottle. Reserva demands 36 months total with at least 12 in barrel. Gran Reserva requires 60 months with at least 24 in barrel. This 2021 is a Crianza — younger, fruitier and more immediate than the two higher tiers.
Should I drink this now or cellar it?
It drinks well now with 30 minutes of decanting. However, the structure will soften and integrate through 2028. The optimal window is therefore 2025 to 2028 — not a long-term cellar candidate, but it will improve short-term.
What food works best with this Crianza?
Grilled lamb chops, chorizo stew and beef empanadas are ideal. The moderate tannin and vanilla-spice profile suit charred meat and tomato-based dishes. Additionally, aged Manchego and patatas bravas work for a tapas-style spread.
Is American oak better than French oak for Rioja?
Neither is better — they are different. American oak imparts vanilla, coconut and dill; French oak gives spice, cedar and toast. Rioja’s tradition is American oak, and Cune maintains that approach. The choice is a matter of style preference, not quality hierarchy.
Can I serve this slightly chilled?
Yes. At 14–16°C — slightly below room temperature. The acidity brightens and the fruit becomes more vivid. This is particularly effective in warm weather. However, do not over-chill below 12°C, as the aromatics will contract.
What should I do if this bottle is out of stock?
Our customer service team can help you find a suitable alternative or source the product where possible. Reach out before your event.
How fast can I get this Rioja delivered in Nairobi?
Nairobi orders placed before 9 PM qualify for same-day delivery, typically completed within a 1-hour window. Free delivery applies to orders above KES 3,000 within Nairobi. Orders outside Nairobi are delivered nationwide across Kenya within 24 to 48 hours.

Description

A classic Rioja Crianza from one of the region’s founding houses, now available in Nairobi, Kenya. The 2021 vintage delivers Tempranillo’s signature cherry and vanilla through 18 months in American oak.

The 2021 growing season in Rioja was warm and dry. As a result, Tempranillo achieved full ripeness while retaining the variety’s natural acidity. Additionally, the winemaking team employed 18 months in American oak — the traditional Rioja method that imparts vanilla and coconut notes rather than the spice of French oak. The 15% Garnacha and Mazuelo add flesh and colour to the Tempranillo backbone. The critical reception has been consistent. The Cune Crianza regularly scores 90 points from international critics and carries the Rioja DOC guarantee. The highest classification in Spanish wine law. Moreover, the house remains family-influenced despite its scale, with the fifth generation involved in operations. For buyers in Nairobi, Kenya seeking an authentic, food-friendly Rioja with genuine regional pedigree, this is the most reliable option currently available at The Wine Box Kenya.

About The Winery
The winery was founded in 1879 by the Real de Asúa brothers in Haro, Rioja Alta. The house grew rapidly during the phylloxera epidemic, when Bordeaux winemakers sought Rioja fruit after their own vineyards collapsed. Cune’s original cellars were excavated by hand into the clay beneath Haro, providing natural temperature control. The fifth generation remains involved in daily operations, though the house now operates at significant scale. The commitment to American oak and traditional Crianza ageing has not wavered. For buyers in Kenya, Cune represents one of the most consistent sources of authentic Rioja; a producer whose name carries weight in Spanish restaurants from Madrid to Nairobi.
