Dagromis is made to be enjoyed soon, while still carrying genuine depth and ageing potential. Blending across La Morra and Serralunga also gives it a breadth of character that a single site can’t match on its own, structure from one commune and perfume from the other in the same glass. For buyers in Kenya wanting to experience what a Gaja Barolo actually delivers without committing to the estate’s most serious and expensive bottlings, this is the most accessible route into that reputation at The Wine Box.

Tasting Notes

Dense ruby in the glass with a garnet edge that hints at the barrel time already behind it. The nose opens slowly, dried roses and wild herbs first, then licorice and a faint touch of smoke, with earthy and mineral undertones building underneath. Red cherry and dark plum sit at the centre of the fruit, joined by a savoury thread of leather and a touch of tar that Nebbiolo is known for. On the palate, the tannins are firm but finely textured rather than harsh, and the acidity stays bright throughout, which keeps the whole wine feeling alive rather than heavy. Ripe red fruit and anise carry through the mid-palate, and the finish runs long, closing on a gentle salinity and a clear mineral edge. This is a wine that shows real presence without pushing too hard, structured enough to reward patience but already giving plenty to enjoy right now.

Food Pairing

This wine wants food with weight and a bit of fat to work against. Braised short rib, osso buco and slow-cooked lamb shank are the classic Piedmontese matches, the tannins cutting cleanly through the richness of each dish. A truffle risotto is worth trying if the occasion allows for it, since Nebbiolo and truffle share an earthy register that plays well together. Aged hard cheeses, particularly something like a mature Parmigiano, also hold up against the wine’s structure without being overwhelmed. For a Nairobi dinner where the meal has some ambition behind it, this is the kind of bottle that rewards a bit of planning around the food rather than being poured as an afterthought.

What You Need to Know:

What does the name Dagromis actually mean?
It refers to the Gromis family, who previously owned the vineyards in La Morra and Serralunga d’Alba that Gaja acquired in 1995. The name is a way of acknowledging that history rather than folding the vineyards quietly into the rest of the estate.

How is this different from Gaja’s other Barolo wines?
Dagromis blends fruit from two communes rather than focusing on a single vineyard, and it’s made to be more approachable earlier in life. Gaja’s single-vineyard Barolos are typically built for much longer cellaring before they’re ready to drink.

Should I drink this now or wait?
It can be enjoyed now, but it will continue to develop with proper cellaring through to around 2035. The tannins are firm enough to reward some patience if you have the space to hold it.

What food works best with this wine?
Braised short rib, osso buco and slow-cooked lamb are the classic matches. A truffle risotto or a mature hard cheese like Parmigiano also pair well given the wine’s earthy character.

Is Nebbiolo the same as Barolo?
Nebbiolo is the grape variety. Barolo is the appellation in Piedmont where that grape reaches its most serious expression, under strict rules around ageing and production that define the DOCG classification.

Description

Nebbiolo from two of Barolo’s most respected communes, aged for over two years in oak before it ever reaches the bottle. Made to be more approachable in youth than Gaja’s single-vineyard wines, without giving up the structure Barolo is known for. Order online in Nairobi through The Wine Box.

Barolo is usually a single-vineyard conversation, but Dagromis takes a different approach. The fruit comes from two separate communes, La Morra and Serralunga d’Alba, each with its own soil, exposure and vine age. Blending across sites like this is a deliberate choice rather than a compromise. It lets the wine draw structure from Serralunga’s firmer tannins while pulling perfume and finesse from La Morra, producing something more complete than either site would give on its own.

The name itself carries some history. When Gaja acquired these vineyards in 1995, they had previously belonged to the Gromis family, and the wine was named in their honour rather than folded quietly into the rest of the estate’s range. Each lot spends 12 months in oak before blending, then a further 18 months together, close to two and a half years of barrel time before release. That length of ageing is designed specifically to make the wine drinkable earlier than Gaja’s single-vineyard Barolos, while still holding onto real ageing potential. For a Nairobi buyer who wants to understand what a serious Barolo actually tastes like without needing to wait a decade to open it, this is one of the more accessible entry points into that world.

About The Winery

The Gaja family has been making wine in Barbaresco since 1859, and it was Angelo Gaja, taking over the estate in 1961, who reshaped how the winery approached both the vineyard and the cellar, blending respect for Langhe tradition with a willingness to break from convention where it mattered. The family expanded into Barolo through vineyard acquisitions in the 1990s and later into Tuscany, with estates in Montalcino and Bolgheri joining the portfolio. Angelo’s children, Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni, now represent the fifth generation involved in running the business. The estate remains based in Barbaresco, working across roughly 96 hectares of vineyards in Barbaresco and Barolo, with wines available through The Wine Box Kenya in Nairobi.
