Gaja Idda Bianco 2024

Unlike most Etna whites, made entirely from vineyards inside the DOP boundary, Idda deliberately blends fruit from both inside and outside that line, giving it a broader base to draw structure and character from. Most Carricante built purely on steely acidity, this wine carries more textural weight and a savory, almost saline depth that comes from the specific combination of Biancavilla and Belpasso soils. For buyers in Kenya interested in what happens when two respected winemaking families collaborate on a single project, this is one of the more distinctive white wine stories on the shelf at The Wine Box.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw in the glass with a faint green shimmer at the rim. The nose opens with lemon, orange and grapefruit, layered against ripe peach, nectarine and apricot, with wisteria and orange blossom threading through the fruit. A touch of almond paste and melon sits underneath, along with a subtle mineral note that hints at the volcanic ground beneath the vines. On the palate, the attack brings tropical and stone fruit forward, peach and passion fruit especially, held together by a firm texture and genuinely vibrant acidity. The oak influence, where present, stays fully integrated and never intrudes on the fruit. The finish runs long and crisp, closing with a saline concentration and a light tang of citrus that lingers well after the glass is empty. This is Carricante with real presence, savory and textured rather than the sharp, steely style the grape is sometimes known for.
Food Pairing
This wine calls for Mediterranean food with genuine flavour behind it. Grilled swordfish or another firm white fish is the most natural match, the wine’s saline finish echoing the sea rather than fighting it. Fresh burrata with olive oil and good bread works well too, letting the wine’s acidity cut through the richness of the cheese. A simple pasta with clams or a light seafood risotto follows the same logic. For a Nairobi dinner where the setting calls for something with genuine character rather than an easy default white, this is the bottle that gives the meal a bit more to talk about.
Accolades

What You Need To Know:
What does the name Idda actually mean?
It means she in Sicilian dialect, the word locals use when referring to Mount Etna with a sense of affection and awe. The name is a direct tribute to the volcano the vineyards sit on.
Why is this labelled Sicilia Bianco instead of Etna Bianco?
The Belpasso vineyard, where the winery itself was built, sits just outside the official Etna DOP boundary. Since Gaja had planned this project as a Sicilia wine from the start, the label has carried that designation since the very first vintage.
Is this the same style as other Etna whites I might have tried?
Similar grape, different character. Most Etna whites lean sharp and steely. This one carries more textural weight and a savory, saline depth from the specific blend of Biancavilla and Belpasso fruit, giving it more richness on the palate than a typical Carricante.
What food pairs best with this wine?
Grilled swordfish or another firm white fish is the strongest match. Fresh burrata, a light seafood pasta or a simple risotto with clams also work well against the wine’s acidity and mineral finish.
Is this a good introduction to Gaja for someone who has never tried the estate’s wines?
It’s one of the more accessible entry points, both in price and style, compared to the family’s Barolo and Barbaresco range. It also offers a different side of the Gaja story, showing the family’s work outside Piedmont.
What should I do if this bottle is out of stock?
Our customer service team can help you find a suitable alternative or source the product where possible.
Can I get Gaja Idda Bianco delivered same day in Nairobi?
Nairobi orders placed before 9 PM qualify for same-day delivery, typically completed within a 1-hour window. Free delivery applies to orders above KES 3,000 within Nairobi. Orders outside Nairobi are delivered nationwide across Kenya within 24 to 48 hours.
Description
A joint project between two of Italy’s most respected names, grown on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna and named after the mountain itself. Idda means she in Sicilian dialect, the term islanders use when they speak of the volcano with real affection. Order online in Nairobi through The Wine Box Kenya.
Idda is not a Gaja wine in the way Sperss or Barbaresco are. It’s a partnership, built jointly with Alberto Graci, one of the leading names in Etna winemaking, and the two families share the vision behind every bottle. The estate draws from two vineyards that behave differently even though they sit close together. Biancavilla lies within the official Etna DOP boundary and carries some of the oldest Carricante vines on the mountain, planted on pale, ancient soil. Belpasso sits just outside that boundary, on darker, more porous ground thick with volcanic rock, and it’s here that the Idda winery itself was built. Gaja had always intended to plant on Etna, which is why the wine has carried the Sicilia Bianco designation from its very first vintage rather than the Etna DOP name.
The 2024 season brought its own particular rhythm of rainfall, temperature and sunlight, and the result is a wine that leans savory rather than purely fruity, with real textural weight for a Carricante. James Suckling scored the 2024 at 92 points, describing it as fresh and peppery with a spicy, citrusy nose. For a Nairobi buyer curious about what Etna is capable of beyond the more commonly seen reds, this is one of the more considered white wine projects to come off the mountain, carrying two serious names behind a single bottle.

About The Winery
Angelo Gaja took over his family’s Barbaresco estate in 1961, and over the decades that followed extended the family’s reach well beyond Piedmont, acquiring properties in Tuscany at Pieve Santa Restituta and Ca’ Marcanda. The move onto Mount Etna came later still, in partnership with Alberto Graci, whose own reputation on the volcano made him the natural collaborator for a project the Gaja family had wanted to pursue for years. Angelo now works alongside his children Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni, the fifth generation involved in the family’s winemaking, spanning properties across Piedmont, Tuscany and now Sicily. The wines are available through The Wine Box in Kenya.
