Unlike the estate’s Brunello di Montalcino or its single-vineyard Rennina and Sugarille, both built for years of cellaring before they’re fully ready, this Rosso is made to be opened immediately, giving a much faster read on what Pieve Santa Restituta’s Sangiovese tastes like. For buyers in Kenya wanting to understand Gaja’s Tuscan project without the wait or the price tag the Brunello range carries, this is the most accessible entry point at The Wine Box Kenya.

Tasting Notes

Bright ruby in the glass, lighter and more youthful in colour than the estate’s Brunello wines, a clear sign of its shorter ageing and earlier drinking window. Ripe red cherry and wild strawberry lead on the nose, with a savoury thread of Mediterranean herb sitting just underneath. On the palate the entry is fresh and direct, the fruit carrying real juiciness rather than density. The tannins are present but soft, framing the fruit rather than gripping it, and the acidity stays lively throughout, keeping the wine feeling energetic rather than heavy. The finish is clean and moderate in length, closing on red fruit and a faint herbal note rather than the layered complexity a Brunello would show. This is Sangiovese in its most approachable form, built for drinking now rather than waiting.

Food Pairing

This is an easier, more casual match than the estate’s Brunello wines. Grilled sausage, roast chicken and simple tomato-based pasta dishes all sit comfortably alongside it, the wine’s freshness and moderate tannins asking nothing complicated of the food. A board of cured meats and young pecorino works just as well for something lighter. For a Nairobi weeknight where the plan is a relaxed dinner rather than a formal occasion, this is the bottle that opens easily and drinks without ceremony.

What You Need to Know:

How is this different from Gaja’s Brunello di Montalcino?
Both come from the same Pieve Santa Restituta estate and the same Sangiovese grape, but Rosso di Montalcino requires far less ageing before release under Italian wine law. This bottle is made to be opened now, while the estate’s Brunello wines need years of cellaring before they’re ready.

Is this a good introduction to Gaja if I’ve never tried the estate’s wines?
Yes, and it may be the most practical one. It carries the estate’s name and grape at a fraction of the wait and price of the Brunello range, making it an easy way to get a first impression of Pieve Santa Restituta.

Should I cellar this or drink it soon?
Drink it within a few years of the vintage. This wine is built for early, fresh drinking rather than long-term ageing, and it’s at its best while the fruit is still vibrant.

What food works best with this bottle?
Grilled sausage, roast chicken and tomato-based pasta are easy, reliable matches. A board of cured meats and young pecorino also works well for something more casual.

What should I do if this bottle is out of stock?
Our customer service team can help you find a suitable alternative or source the product where possible. Reach out before your event.

Can I get this delivered same day in Nairobi?
Nairobi orders placed before 9 PM qualify for same-day delivery, typically completed within a 1-hour window. Free delivery applies to orders above KES 3,000 within Nairobi. Orders outside Nairobi are delivered nationwide across Kenya within 24 to 48 hours.

Description

The most accessible route into Gaja’s Tuscan project, made entirely from Sangiovese grown around a fourth-century parish church. Ready to drink years before the estate’s Brunello ever leaves the cellar. Order online in Nairobi through The Wine Box Kenya.

Brunello di Montalcino is a wine built for patience. By law it needs a minimum of four years before release, including two years in barrel, and most bottles need longer still in the cellar before they show their best. Rosso di Montalcino exists precisely to answer the question of what to drink while that patience plays out. It comes from the same Sangiovese, grown in the same corner of Tuscany, but under an appellation that asks for a fraction of the ageing and gets the wine into a glass much sooner.

This bottle carries the Pieve Santa Restituta name, Gaja’s estate built around a parish church that dates back to the fourth century, acquired by the family in 1994 as their first move outside Piedmont. Where the estate’s Brunello wines are built for a decade or more of development, this Rosso is designed to be opened without waiting, giving a much more immediate read on the character of Montalcino Sangiovese. For a Nairobi buyer who wants to taste what this producer does in Tuscany without the price or the patience the Brunello range demands, this is the most direct way in.

About The Winery

Angelo Gaja took over his family’s Barbaresco estate in 1961, having inherited a winery founded in 1859, and spent the decades that followed reshaping how the family approached both vineyard and cellar. In 1994 he expanded outside Piedmont for the first time, acquiring Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino, a property built around a parish church with roots stretching back to the fourth century. Two years later the family added a second Tuscan estate, Ca’ Marcanda in Bolgheri. Angelo’s children, Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni, now represent the fifth generation working across the family’s properties in Piedmont, Tuscany and Sicily. The wines are available through The Wine Box.
