About the Distillery

Glenkinchie Distillery is situated near the village of Pencaitland, in the Lowland region of Scotland. It is one of the few remaining operational distilleries in the Lowlands, known for producing whiskies with a milder and more gentle profile compared to their counterparts from other regions.  

How this product is made

The production of Glenkinchie 12 Year Old single malt whisky involves the following key steps:

Malted Barley: Glenkinchie 12 Year Old is made from 100% malted barley. The barley grains are soaked in water, allowed to germinate, and then dried in kilns to halt germination. This process converts the starches in the barley into fermentable sugars and develops the barley’s flavors.

Milling and Mashing: The dried malted barley is ground into grist, which is then mixed with hot water in the mash tun. This creates a sugary liquid known as wort.

Fermentation: The wort is cooled and transferred to fermentation vessels, where yeast is added. Yeast converts the sugars in the wort into alcohol during fermentation, producing a liquid known as “”wash.””

Distillation: The wash is distilled twice in copper pot stills. This double distillation process helps refine the spirit and concentrates its flavors.

Maturation: The distilled spirit is filled into oak casks, typically ex-bourbon barrels, and aged for a minimum of 12 years. During maturation, the whisky interacts with the wood of the cask, gaining its color, flavor, and complexity.

Bottling: After maturation, the whisky is carefully selected, filtered, and bottled at its optimal strength, ready for distribution.

Nose: The aroma is light and fragrant, with notes of fresh-cut grass, honey, floral hints, and subtle fruitiness.
Palate: On the palate, the whisky offers a smooth and gentle texture. Flavors of citrus, green apple, vanilla, and a touch of malt sweetness come through.
Finish: The finish is clean and crisp, with a slight herbal note and a gentle warmth.

Alcohol Content:
Glenkinchie 12 Year Old typically has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of around 43%, which is slightly higher than the standard 40% ABV found in many whiskies.”
