Unlike most Mediterranean whites at this price point, which come from hotter inland sites and lack certification, La Grande Bleue is certified organic with a Vinalies Nationales Or medal. Furthermore, the Méditerranée IGP coastal influence gives more saline precision and freshness than generic Languedoc alternatives. As a result, the wine achieves a level of authenticity and recognised quality that mass market alternatives cannot match. For those comparing entry level organic white options in Nairobi, this Gérard Bertrand blend offers certified farming, award credentials and genuine Mediterranean character at a price point that undercuts comparable Provence or Corsican bottles.

Tasting Notes

Pale straw with green highlights. The nose is immediate and maritime. Initially, lemon zest, green apple and sea spray dominate. The coastal signature is unmistakable. However, with a few minutes in the glass, white peach, fennel pollen and a faint jasmine note emerge. Furthermore, wet stone minerality and a trace of dried thyme develop over time. On the palate, the wine is light to medium in weight. The entry is crisp and mouth watering. Bright acidity carries flavours of grapefruit, white nectarine and a hint of saline through the mid palate. The finish is clean and mineral. Crushed oyster shell, lemon peel and a faint herbal trace that persists for 20 seconds. This wine is built for immediacy. Serve well chilled and drink within 12 months of release.
Food Pairing
This coastal white pairs with light, fresh dishes. Grilled sea bass with lemon and herb crust and oysters on the half shell are therefore the strongest matches. The wine’s saline finish and citrus character complement seafood without overpowering it. Additionally, goat cheese salad, grilled calamari and linguine alle vongole work well at the table. The acidity cuts through richness cleanly. For a Nairobi afternoon where the occasion calls for something refreshing and maritime, this is the bottle that delivers. A poolside lunch, a seafood braai, or a midweek dinner where the goal is simply to have something crisp and coastal in the glass. Serve at 8 to 10°C. No decanting required.

What You Need to Know:

What does this white taste like compared to Sauvignon Blanc?
This is more mineral and less overtly fruity than Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. The Vermentino gives saline, citrus precision rather than intense passion fruit and gooseberry. It is consequently more food friendly and more maritime in character. Think of it as a Mediterranean alternative with more restraint.
Is this too acidic for someone who usually drinks oaked Chardonnay?
If your reference is full bodied, creamy Chardonnay, this will feel lean and crisp. There is no oak and the acidity is prominent. It is consequently a different style entirely. Think of it as a seafood wine rather than a rich dish companion.
Should I drink this now or cellar it?
Drink now. This wine is built for immediacy and will not improve with age. The optimal window is 2025 only. The screwcap preserves freshness but the primary fruit and delicate aromatics will fade rather than develop complexity.
What food works best with this coastal white?
Grilled sea bass with lemon, oysters and goat cheese salad are ideal. The high acidity and saline character suit seafood, fresh cheese and light pasta. Additionally, grilled calamari and linguine alle vongole work for more elaborate occasions.
How does La Grande Bleue differ from Gérard Bertrand’s Cigalus or Clos d’Ora tiers?
La Grande Bleue is an accessible, coastal focused line designed for everyday drinking and immediate freshness. Cigalus and Clos d’Ora are single estate, premium tiers with longer ageing and greater concentration. La Grande Bleue consequently offers entry into Bertrand’s philosophy without the investment.
Does the screwcap affect freshness?
No. Screwcap eliminates cork taint and ensures consistent freshness. For a wine designed for consumption within 12 months, it is the ideal closure. The primary fruit and delicate aromatics are preserved without risk of oxidation.
What should I do if this bottle is out of stock?
Our customer service team can help you find a suitable alternative or source the product where possible. Reach out before your event.
How fast can I get this white delivered in Nairobi?
Nairobi orders placed before 9 PM qualify for same day delivery, typically completed within a 1 hour window. Free delivery applies to orders above KES 3,000 within Nairobi. Orders outside Nairobi are delivered nationwide across Kenya within 24 to 48 hours.

Description

A Vermentino led blend from Gérard Bertrand’s coastal Languedoc range, now available in Nairobi, Kenya. The 2024 vintage delivers saline freshness and Mediterranean herbs through fruit grown within sight of the sea.

La Grande Bleue is Gérard Bertrand’s certified organic white dedicated to Mediterranean coastal expression. The name references the sea itself. The vineyards sit within the Méditerranée IGP, where maritime influence moderates temperature and preserves acidity. This is not inland Languedoc. It is coastal viticulture with a climate shaped by the sea.
The 2025 growing season was warm and dry. As a result, the organic fruit achieved full flavour ripeness while the maritime breeze retained freshness. Furthermore, the winemaking team employed cool fermentation in stainless steel. This technique locks in primary aromatics and prevents oxidation. There is no oak. The wine is bottled young to maximise immediacy and transparency.
The critical recognition is significant. The 2025 vintage received Vinalies Nationales Or, one of France’s most respected wine competitions. Additionally, the organic certification ensures no synthetic pesticides or herbicides touch the vineyards. For buyers in Nairobi seeking a certified organic, food friendly white with genuine Mediterranean credentials and award recognition, this is the most distinctive bottle currently available at The Wine Box.

About The Winery

Gérard Bertrand took over his father’s Domaine de Villemajou in 1987 at the age of 22, following his father Georges’ sudden death. Georges had been a pioneer of independent winemaking in the Corbières. Gérard expanded the family business into a constellation of 16 estates across the Languedoc Roussillon, encompassing over 850 hectares of vineyards. He has been a leading advocate for biodynamic viticulture in the region since the early 2000s, with a significant portion of his vineyards now certified by Demeter.
The La Grande Bleue line was created to express the essence of the Mediterranean through certified organic wines from coastal terroirs. The Méditerranée IGP allows fruit sourcing from across the Mediterranean coastline, capturing the sea’s influence on vine and wine. For buyers in Kenya, Gérard Bertrand represents one of the most dynamic and vertically integrated producers in the South of France. The La Grande Bleue line offers an accessible entry into his philosophy of organic, terroir driven winemaking with recognised quality. A name that carries weight from Corbières to Nairobi.
