About the Distillery
The Macallan is a world-renowned Scotch whisky distillery located in Craigellachie, Speyside, Scotland. Founded in 1824, it is known for producing high-quality single-malt whiskies and is highly regarded among whisky enthusiasts.
How this product is made
Malted Barley: The Macallan uses 100% malted barley as the base ingredient for its whisky. The barley is allowed to germinate, and the germinated barley, known as “malt,” is dried in kilns to halt the germination process.
Mashing: The malted barley is ground into a coarse powder known as grist, which is mixed with hot water in a mash tun. This process extracts sugars from the barley, creating a sugary liquid called “wort.”
Fermentation: The wort is fermented with yeast in washbacks, where the sugars are converted into alcohol, resulting in a liquid known as “wash.”
Distillation: The wash is distilled twice in copper pot stills. This double distillation process allows the spirit to achieve the desired purity and concentration of flavors.
Aging: The distilled spirit is then transferred to oak casks for aging. The Macallan 15-Year-Old Double Cask is matured in a combination of sherry-seasoned American oak casks and sherry-seasoned European oak casks for at least 15 years.”
