Naturalys Merlot 2023

Unlike Cabernet Sauvignon, which carries firm tannins that can clash with lighter or spiced foods, Naturalys Merlot’s softness makes it genuinely approachable for first-time red wine drinkers and seasoned buyers alike. It sits apart from entry-level blended reds in the same price bracket because the organic certification is verifiable, the grape variety is undisguised, and the producer behind it has an internationally documented track record across 17 estates in southern France. For buyers shopping for organic red wine in Nairobi, this is one of the few bottles at this price tier that carries a recognised third-party certification.
Tasting notes
Deep ruby with a faint violet rim. On the nose, ripe blackcurrant and wild strawberry are immediately present, softened by a background of sweet spice; clove and a faint trace of dried undergrowth. The palate entry is gentle, almost plush, with low-grip tannins that dissolve quickly into a mid-palate of juicy dark plum and a hint of cacao powder. There is no oak here, which keeps the fruit clean and undisguised. Acidity is moderate, enough to keep the wine from feeling heavy, not enough to make it lean. The finish is short to medium, leaving behind a faint note of red berry skin and dry earth that fades within 20–25 seconds. The signature of this style is its directness: what you smell is almost exactly what you taste.
Description
Naturalys Merlot is certified organic Merlot from the sun-soaked heart of Languedoc. The entry point into French red wine for the Nairobi dinner table that does not want to overthink the bottle.
This is a Merlot built for accessibility rather than cellaring. The 2023 vintage delivers the grape variety in its most transparent form, No oak, no extraction, no structural complexity to navigate. Buyers who are new to French reds, or who find Cabernet Sauvignon’s tannins too firm for everyday drinking, tend to reach for this style consistently. Ideal for a relaxed mid-week dinner or as a reliable bottle to bring to a Nairobi gathering where guests have varied palates and nobody wants to debate the wine.
The organic certification adds a layer of reassurance for buyers who are increasingly seeking cleaner labels — a trend growing steadily in the Kenyan market, particularly among younger urban buyers.

About The Winery
Gérard Bertrand took over the family estate, in 1987 at the age of 22 following the sudden death of his father Georges. He founded the Gérard Bertrand wine company in 1992, initially to build a portfolio of wines from Languedoc-Roussillon at a time when the region was largely associated with bulk production. He began converting his estates to biodynamic farming at Cigalus in 2002, and today presides over 17 châteaux and estates covering more than 850 hectares — collectively recognised as the world’s largest biodynamic wine domaine. His Château l’Hospitalet Grand Vin Rouge was named Best Red Wine in the World at the International Wine Challenge in 2019. The Naturalys range, certified organic by Ecocert, represents his entry-level commitment to the same farming principles applied across the full estate portfolio.
