Tasting Notes
Deep garnet with a narrow brick rim, even in youth. The nose is powerful and reticent at first pour. Initially, dried rose petal, tar and crushed raspberry dominate — classic Serralunga signatures. However, with two hours in the decanter, leather, tobacco, forest floor and a distinct balsamic note emerge. Furthermore, blood orange peel, aniseed and a faint graphite minerality develop over time. These are the signatures of old-vine Nebbiolo grown on calcareous clay.
On the palate, the wine is dense and architectural. The tannins are firm and granular, providing the backbone for decades of ageing. Additionally, they are matched by extraordinary acidity which is bright, angular and persistent. Sour cherry, redcurrant and dried cranberry carry through the mid-palate alongside plum skin and dried rose. Meanwhile, the 24 months in large Slavonian cask contributes a subtle spice and cedar note without the vanilla sweetness of new French oak. Consequently, the finish is outstanding in length — tar, rose petal, crushed rock and a saline mineral trace persist for well over a minute. This wine is still an infant. It will drink well now with a long decant, however the most rewarding window is likely 2030 to 2040.
Food Pairing
At 14.5% ABV and with the structure of a wine built for two decades of cellaring, this Barolo demands food with significant weight and richness. Braised beef cheek and osso buco are therefore the strongest matches. The wine’s firm tannins and high acidity cut through gelatinous fat and long-cooked sauces cleanly, while the red fruit and tar character mirrors the depth of slow-braised meat. Additionally, aged Parmigiano-Reggiano with 36 months of maturation works at the end of a meal once the wine has fully opened. White truffle risotto, when in season, is another classic pairing — the wine’s earthiness and the truffle’s aromatics create a remarkable synergy. This is not an everyday bottle. It is, however, the definitive choice for a milestone celebration, a significant corporate gift, or a collector’s dinner in Nairobi and Kenya where provenance and ageing potential matter. Decant for a minimum of two to three hours before serving.
What You Need to Know:
Is this a single-vineyard Barolo?
No. This is a blended Barolo from Massolino’s estate vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba, including fruit from the Margheria and Parafada crus. However, it is not a designated single-vineyard or “cru” bottling — those command significantly higher prices.
Should I drink this now or cellar it?
It is approachable now with extended decanting. However, Antonio Galloni and the producer both recommend patience. The most rewarding window is therefore likely 2030 to 2040, with the potential to evolve positively through 2045.
How does Serralunga Barolo differ from other communes?
Serralunga produces the most structured and tannic Barolo. In contrast, La Morra tends towards softness and accessibility, while Monfortino offers perfume and elegance. Serralunga’s calcareous-clay soils and higher elevation consequently yield wines of greater longevity and mineral complexity.
Why is the 1.5L magnum format significant?
Larger format bottles age more slowly due to a lower oxygen-to-wine ratio. As a result, magnums preserve freshness and develop complexity over a longer timeframe than standard 750ml bottles. For collectors, they also offer provenance assurance and presentation impact.
What food works best with Barolo?
Braised beef cheek, osso buco and aged Parmigiano-Reggiano are the strongest matches. The wine’s tannin and acidity require food with significant richness, fat or umami depth. Furthermore, white truffle risotto is a classic pairing when in season.

Description

A benchmark Barolo from two of Piedmont’s most respected names, now available in Nairobi, Kenya. The 2020 vintage combines Massolino’s old-vine Serralunga fruit with Prunotto’s precision winemaking, delivering a 1.5L magnum of extraordinary depth and longevity.

The 2020 growing season in Piedmont was warm and dry. As a result, Nebbiolo achieved full phenolic ripeness while maintaining the variety’s characteristic acidity. Harvest ran from mid-September to early October — slightly earlier than average, which preserved freshness in the fruit. Additionally, the Massolino team employed their traditional long maceration, extracting colour and tannin slowly rather than through aggressive pumping over.
The critical response has been outstanding. The 2020 Massolino Barolo received 96 points from Wine Enthusiast and 95 points from Vinous. Moreover, Antonio Galloni noted the wine’s “remarkable finesse for such a young Barolo,” highlighting the balance between structure and elegance. For collectors in Nairobi, Kenya seeking a cellar-worthy Italian red with a fully documented track record, this 1.5L magnum represents exceptional value at The Wine Box Kenya.

About The Winery
Alfredo Prunotto founded his winery in Alba in 1922, establishing a reputation for precision and elegance in Piedmontese winemaking. The house has since become a reference point for quality across Barolo and Barbaresco. Massolino, founded in 1896 by Giovanni Massolino, remains family-operated in Serralunga d’Alba. The estate’s holdings in the Margheria and Parafada crus are among the most sought-after parcels in the commune. The collaboration between these two houses brings together Prunotto’s technical rigour and Massolino’s extraordinary vineyard material. For collectors and drinkers in Kenya, this partnership represents one of the most reliable sources of traditionally made Barolo. Wines that reward patience and proper cellaring with a complexity that younger, more extracted styles cannot achieve.
