The Blend of Terroirs Cabernet Sauvignon draws on two distinct cold-climate paths within Uco Valley. Gualtallary’s altitude and El Cepillo’s southern exposure achieve similar cooling effects through different mechanisms, and the blend captures both. Furthermore, unlike entry-level Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon, which is often sourced from warmer, lower-altitude sites that produce softer, less structured wines, this blend is built specifically around cold-climate intensity. For buyers in Kenya comparing Argentinian reds at The Wine Box Kenya, this is consequently one of the more structurally serious Cabernet Sauvignon options on the shelf.

Tasting Notes

Deep garnet in the glass with a dense, opaque core that signals the concentration typical of high-altitude Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose opens with blackberry and blackcurrant, layered with a distinctive spiced edge that is characteristic of Gualtallary fruit. Behind the primary dark fruit, vanilla and cacao notes emerge from the French oak ageing, adding warmth and depth without overpowering the fruit. On the palate, the entry is firm and structured. Dark berry fruit carries through the mid-palate alongside a subtle spice note, while the El Cepillo component contributes a thread of freshness that keeps the wine balanced rather than dense. The tannins are round and well integrated, framing the fruit with grip rather than harshness. The finish is long and structured, closing with dark fruit skin and a trace of cacao that lingers cleanly. This is a Cabernet Sauvignon built for structure and ageability, with enough fruit generosity to remain approachable.

Food Pairing

The structure and dark fruit concentration of this Cabernet Sauvignon point directly to richly flavoured red meat. Grilled ribeye and roasted lamb are the strongest matches as the wine’s firm tannins cut through fat cleanly while the dark fruit complements the intensity of the meat. Beef short rib and dishes with a peppercorn or red wine reduction also hold up well alongside a glass. Additionally, the spice and cacao notes from the oak ageing pair naturally with dishes that carry a similar warmth, such as slow-roasted meats with a herb crust. For a Nairobi dinner where the main course is a substantial cut of beef or lamb, this is consequently a Cabernet Sauvignon built to match that intensity rather than be overwhelmed by it.

What You need to Know

What makes blending two vineyard sites different from a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon?
Gualtallary and El Cepillo achieve cold-climate ripening through different mechanisms — altitude versus southern exposure on the valley floor. Combining them captures both spice-driven concentration and structural freshness in one wine.

Is this Cabernet Sauvignon dry or does it carry some sweetness?
Fully dry. The blackberry and blackcurrant aromas can read as ripe rather than sweet, and the palate closes cleanly with dark fruit skin and cacao rather than any residual sugar.

How does this compare to a standard Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon?
This wine carries more structure and concentration than warmer, lower-altitude Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon. The high-altitude Gualtallary fruit delivers a spiced edge and firm tannins that softer, entry-level examples typically lack.

What food pairs best with this wine?
Grilled ribeye and roasted lamb are the strongest matches. Beef short rib and dishes with a peppercorn or red wine reduction also hold up well alongside a glass.

Should I decant this before serving?
Yes. A 30 to 45 minute decant will soften the firm tannins and open the spice and cacao notes.

What should I do if this bottle is out of stock?
Our customer service team can help you find a suitable alternative or source the product where possible. Reach out before your event.

How fast can I get Rutini Blend of Terroirs Cabernet Sauvignon delivered in Nairobi?
Nairobi orders placed before 9 PM qualify for same-day delivery, typically completed within a 1-hour window. Free delivery applies to orders above KES 3,000 within Nairobi. Orders outside Nairobi are delivered nationwide across Kenya within 24 to 48 hours.

Description

Two of Uco Valley’s coldest sites combine in a single Cabernet Sauvignon. Gualtallary’s altitude meets El Cepillo’s valley floor freshness, now available at The Wine Box Kenya in Nairobi.

Cabernet Sauvignon performs best on sites that deliver consistent cold during ripening, and Uco Valley offers two of Mendoza’s coldest growing areas within a single appellation. Gualtallary sits at the western edge of the valley, the highest and coldest point in the region, where gravel and sand soils force the vines to work harder and concentrate flavour. This site contributes 80% of the blend. El Cepillo, by contrast, achieves its cold climate differently. Despite sitting on the valley floor at lower elevation, its south-facing exposure and newer status as a recognised growing area make it one of the coolest sites in Uco Valley. This contributes the remaining 20%.

Rutini’s winemaking team built this wine around two distinct paths to the same outcome: cold-climate Cabernet Sauvignon with natural acidity and structure. The dominant Gualtallary component delivers concentration and a spiced edge, while the smaller El Cepillo addition adds freshness that keeps the wine from feeling heavy. French oak ageing then contributes vanilla and cacao notes that integrate with round, balanced tannins. For buyers in Nairobi looking for a structured Cabernet Sauvignon with documented vineyard sourcing rather than a generic regional blend, this is one of the more precisely constructed reds currently available through The Wine Box Kenya.

About The Winery

Felipe Rutini, an Italian agricultural technician, founded Bodega La Rural in Mendoza in 1885, establishing one of Argentina’s oldest wine estates still in continuous operation. Over more than a century, the family extended its vineyard holdings across the Uco Valley, eventually acquiring distinct parcels in Gualtallary and El Cepillo — each valued for achieving cold-climate ripening through different means. The Blend of Terroirs line was launched as a modern addition to the Rutini portfolio, designed specifically to showcase how these distinct sub-regions interact when combined within a single wine rather than bottled separately. Head winemaker Mariano Di Paola, recognised by Decanter in 2015 as one of the top 30 winemakers in the world, leads the parcel selection for each release. Rutini Wines now sells in over 60 countries, with the Blend of Terroirs range available through The Wine Box Kenya in Nairobi.
