The Blend of Terroirs Malbec draws on three distinct Uco Valley sub-regions selected for complementary qualities. La Consulta’s richness, El Cepillo’s freshness and Gualtallary’s mineral tension are blended deliberately rather than left to chance. Furthermore, unlike entry-level Mendoza Malbec, which is often sourced from a single broad regional designation without parcel-level detail, this wine offers a documented, traceable composition. For buyers in Kenya comparing Argentinian reds at The Wine Box Kenya, this is consequently one of the more technically specific Malbec options on the shelf. A wine built around terroir contrast rather than a single vineyard’s signature.

Tasting Notes

Deep violet-red in the glass with a bright purple rim, consistent with the variety’s natural pigmentation. The nose opens with ripe plum and blackberry, layered with a distinctive violet floral note that is characteristic of well-grown Malbec. Behind the primary fruit, delicate vanilla and cacao notes emerge from the French oak ageing, adding warmth without masking the fruit underneath. On the palate, the entry is full and rounded, carrying the silky texture that La Consulta’s old vines are known for. Ripe red fruit and a touch of dark plum carry through the mid-palate, supported by the freshness that the El Cepillo component contributes. The tannins are present but well integrated, framing the fruit rather than gripping the palate. A faint mineral tension from the Gualtallary portion surfaces on the back palate, adding structure to what would otherwise be a purely fruit-driven wine. The finish is persistent, closing with dark berry skin and a trace of cacao that lingers cleanly. This is Malbec built around layered complexity rather than a single dominant note.

Food Pairing

The combination of ripe fruit, integrated tannins and a touch of oak spice makes this Malbec a strong match for grilled and roasted red meat. Grilled ribeye and lamb chops are the most direct pairing. The wine’s fruit weight and soft tannins hold up against char and fat without overwhelming the meat. Slow-braised beef short rib and dishes with a rich tomato-based sauce also work well alongside a glass. Additionally, the cacao and vanilla notes from the oak ageing complement dishes with a similar warmth, such as those finished with a peppercorn or red wine reduction. For a Nairobi evening centred around the grill, this is consequently a Malbec that holds its own across a full spread of red meat dishes.

What You Need to Know

What makes blending three vineyard sites different from a single-vineyard Malbec?
Each site contributes a distinct quality. La Consulta’s old vines add richness and a silky texture, El Cepillo’s cooler climate adds freshness, and Gualtallary’s high altitude adds mineral tension, together producing more layered complexity than one site alone.

Is this Malbec dry or does it carry some sweetness?
Fully dry. The ripe plum and blackberry aromas can read as sweet on the nose, but the palate closes cleanly with dark fruit skin and cacao rather than any residual sugar.

How does this compare to a standard Mendoza Malbec?
This wine offers more structural complexity due to its multi-parcel sourcing. Standard Mendoza Malbec is often drawn from a broad regional designation, while this blend is built from three specific, named sub-regions selected for complementary character.

What food pairs best with this wine?
Grilled ribeye and lamb chops are the strongest matches. Slow-braised beef short rib and dishes with a rich tomato-based sauce also hold up well alongside a glass.

Is this a good gift for someone who already drinks Argentinian Malbec regularly?
Yes. The multi-terroir construction and documented sourcing give it a specific story that distinguishes it from more generic Malbec offerings, which makes it a strong choice for a buyer who already knows the category well.

Description

Three Uco Valley terroirs in one Malbec. La Consulta’s old vine richness, El Cepillo’s freshness and Gualtallary’s mineral tension combine in a single wine, now available at The Wine Box Kenya in Nairobi.

Most Malbec from Mendoza draws on a single vineyard or sub-region. This wine deliberately does the opposite. La Consulta contributes the largest share at 50% and brings the variety’s most distinctive quality: old vines planted on slightly clay-rich, deep soils that produce ripe red fruit and a silky texture few other sites can match. El Cepillo, a cooler valley floor site with south-facing exposure, adds 40% and contributes freshness and energy that balances La Consulta’s richness. The remaining 10% from Gualtallary, the highest and coldest point in Uco Valley, brings concentration and a mineral tension that anchors the blend.

About The Winery

Felipe Rutini, an Italian agricultural technician, founded Bodega La Rural in Mendoza in 1885, establishing one of Argentina’s oldest wine estates still in continuous operation. Over more than a century, the family extended its vineyard holdings across the Uco Valley, eventually acquiring distinct parcels in La Consulta, El Cepillo and Gualtallary — each valued for a different combination of soil, altitude and exposure. The Blend of Terroirs line was launched as a modern addition to the Rutini portfolio, designed specifically to showcase how these distinct sub-regions interact when combined within a single wine rather than bottled separately. Head winemaker Mariano Di Paola, recognised by Decanter in 2015 as one of the top 30 winemakers in the world, leads the parcel selection for each release. Rutini Wines now sells in over 60 countries, with the Blend of Terroirs range available through The Wine Box Kenya in Nairobi.
