Tasting Notes
Plum, dark cherry and blackberry lead on the nose, with a charcoal note behind them, and mulberry steps forward as the wine takes on air. French oak adds a touch of vanilla and spice, and earlier vintages also show pepper and a little milk chocolate. On the palate a roasted meat note sits in the middle, over a base of ripe dark fruit. The tannins are fine, with a dusty, brick like grain, and the finish dries out slowly. It is a ripe Barossa Shiraz that is made to be drunk with meat.

Barossa Shiraz from the valley floor is ripe and full, and this one finishes with fine tannins that dry out slowly. That suits beef and lamb, the matches most often listed for it, and venison also works. The reviewer picked up roasted meat and charcoal in the glass, so meat cooked over fire echoes the wine. Blood & Courage is St John’s Road’s version of classic Barossa Valley Shiraz. The fruit comes from the warm valley floor, and the producer’s aim is generous flavour with power and balance. It calls the style Modern Barossa, which means ripe fruit with structure and the ability to age.
The wine is matured in French oak barriques and hogsheads. Hogsheads are larger than barriques, so they add a little less oak flavour, which keeps the fruit in front. The producer describes the oak as subtle and the tannins as soft and well integrated.

About The Winery
Martin and Vivienne Rawlinson established St John’s Road in the Barossa Valley in 2001, after managing a bed and breakfast in the south of France. Their aim was full flavoured wines that reflect the Barossa. The house calls its style Modern Barossa, which means generous fruit from the valley floor with structure and the ability to age. The Blood & Courage range covers a Reserve Shiraz, this Shiraz, a Shiraz Cabernet and a GSM. St John’s Road is a member of The Usual Suspects Collective.
