Sun Goddess Pinot Grigio Ramato 2024

Unlike standard Pinot Grigio, which is produced without skin contact and delivers a light, neutral white wine profile, this Ramato undergoes maceration that extracts colour, texture and a savoury complexity the variety cannot produce as a conventional white. Furthermore, unlike most skin-contact wines available in Kenya, which tend toward extended maceration and deep amber colour, the Fantinel Ramato uses a shorter skin contact period that produces a more accessible copper-pink style — complex enough to be interesting, approachable enough to work as a dinner wine rather than a specialist pour. For buyers in Nairobi and Kenya comparing skin-contact and rosé options at The Wine Box Kenya, this is the most awarded example in this category and the one with the most documented international recognition behind it.
Tasting Notes
Pale copper-pink in the glass, deeper at the centre than the rim, with a clarity that signals careful rather than prolonged skin maceration. The nose opens with ripe white peach and melon, layered with blackberry and a distinctive earthy note that the skin contact introduces something between dried apricot and crushed stone that standard white Pinot Grigio does not produce. Additionally, a faint floral thread and a trace of spice emerge with air. On the palate, the entry is rounder and more textured than a conventional Pinot Grigio. The skin contact contributes soft, barely perceptible tannins that give the wine a slight grip at the back of the palate rather than a clean white wine finish. Peach, melon and a thread of dried herb carry through the mid-palate. The acidity is present and refreshing without being sharp. The finish is mineral and clean, closing with a trace of citrus pith and a faint savoury note that lingers for 20 to 25 seconds. The defining quality here is texture. This is a wine that sits between white and rosé in colour, and between white and red in mouthfeel; a category of its own rather than an approximation of either.
Food Pairing
The soft tannins and textured mid-palate of a Ramato-style wine demand slightly richer food than a standard white Pinot Grigio. Grilled salmon and pan-seared tuna are the strongest structural matches. The tannin grip from the skin contact cuts through the fat of oily fish in a way that unoaked whites cannot. Prosciutto crudo, charcuterie boards and light terracotta-baked chicken also work well alongside a chilled glass. The wine’s earthy, savoury dimension additionally complements mushroom-based dishes and soft washed-rind cheeses. For a Nairobi dinner where the occasion calls for something that holds a table conversation. Visually distinctive in the glass and genuinely different on the palate, this is consequently a bottle that delivers both.
What You Need to know:
What is a Ramato — is this a rosé, a white wine or something else entirely?
Ramato is a traditional Friulian skin-contact white wine, where Pinot Grigio grapes ferment with their naturally pink skins to extract colour, texture and tannin. The result sits between white and rosé in colour and between white and red in mouthfeel — its own category rather than a variation of either.
What does skin-contact mean for the flavour — how is this different from regular Pinot Grigio?
Regular Pinot Grigio removes the skins immediately after pressing, producing a light, neutral white. This Ramato keeps the skins in contact during fermentation, adding peach and melon depth, soft tannins and a savoury earthy note that standard Pinot Grigio cannot produce.
Is this wine dry or does it have sweetness?
Fully dry at 12.5% ABV with no residual sugar. The ripe peach and melon aromas can suggest sweetness, but the palate closes with a mineral and citrus pith note rather than any sweetness.
What food works best with this bottle?
Grilled salmon, pan-seared tuna and prosciutto crudo are the strongest matches. The soft tannins from the skin contact handle oily fish and cured meat cleanly. Mushroom dishes and soft washed-rind cheeses also work alongside a glass.
Is this a good gift for a wine drinker who has tried everything?
Yes. The copper colour, the Mary J. Blige collaboration and the Ramato production story give it strong gift appeal. Additionally, the back-to-back Gold Medal from The Drinks Business provides a documented quality anchor that makes the gift specific rather than generic.
What should I do if this bottle is out of stock?

Description
Italy’s most traditional skin-contact style, made in partnership with Mary J. Blige and Friuli’s Fantinel family. A copper-hued Pinot Grigio that tastes nothing like Pinot Grigio; now available at The Wine Box Kenya in Nairobi.
Ramato is not a modern trend. It is the original way Pinot Grigio was made in Friuli Venezia Giulia before industrial white wine production removed the skins from the equation. The word Ramato translates directly from Italian as auburn or copper, a reference to the colour that Pinot Grigio’s naturally pink-tinged skins impart when left in contact with the juice during fermentation. Consequently, this is not an orange wine in the experimental sense. It is a centuries-old Friulian tradition that fell out of fashion and is now being revived by producers who understand what the grape is actually capable of when its skins are part of the picture.

About The Winery
Mario Fantinel acquired his first vineyards in the Collio area of northern Friuli in 1969, motivated by a simple conviction as a restaurateur: that serving great food required producing great wine. Three generations later, the family manages over 300 hectares across the Friuli, Collio and Colli Orientali DOC zones from their base in Tauriano di Spilimbergo. The Sun Goddess partnership with Grammy-winning artist Mary J. Blige began after she visited the estate, walked the vineyards and tasted with the family. A connection she described as personal rather than commercial. The range launched on June 29, 2020 to immediate global attention, with the Ramato winning a Gold Medal at The Drinks Business Global Rosé Masters within 15 days of release and again the following year. Fantinel distributes Sun Goddess wines across 90+ countries including Kenya, with the 2024 Ramato available through The Wine Box Kenya in Nairobi.
