Most low alcohol wine sacrifices flavour to get there. Light Wave takes a different route, using fruit from the Awatere Valley, the southernmost, coolest and driest of Marlborough’s three sub-regions, to naturally slow ripening and concentrate flavour before alcohol reduction techniques ever come into play. That valley sits between the Black Birch Range and the Inland Kaikoura Range, carved out by ancient glaciers, and its rocky, varied soils and cool water off Clifford Bay push grapes toward more intense fruit character and sharper acidity than warmer Marlborough sites typically produce.
The result at 8% ABV and roughly 80 calories a serving is a wine built to genuinely stand in for a full strength Sauvignon Blanc rather than feel like a compromise. James Suckling scored the 2024 vintage at 89 points, noting its light body, fresh acidity and bright mouthfeel. For a Nairobi buyer who wants to drink Sauvignon Blanc through a longer evening without the alcohol adding up, or who’s simply watching calories without giving up flavour, this is one of the more credible options in that category.

ABOUT THE CROSSINGS
The Crossings was established as its own winery in the Awatere Valley before being acquired by Yealands Estate in 2011, alongside the Hawke’s Bay based Crossroads winery. Yealands itself was founded in 2008 by entrepreneur Peter Yealands on a large stretch of coastal land east of Seddon in Marlborough, growing its holdings to over 1,000 hectares across the Awatere Valley. Since 2018, the group has operated under Marlborough Lines, a community owned power company. The Crossings label continues to draw specifically on Awatere Valley fruit, using the sub-region’s naturally cooler, drier conditions to shape a distinct style within Yealands’ broader portfolio. The wines are available through The Wine Box and you can have your order delivered anywhere in Kenya.
