Trumpeter Reserve Chardonnay 2025

The Trumpeter Reserve uses partial, used-barrel ageing that contributes texture rather than flavour dominance. The result is a bottle that sits in the gap between the unoaked, fruit-only style and the full malo-lactic, heavily toasted style. For buyers in Nairobi shopping for an Argentinian white wine that can serve both casual and occasion drinking, this is one of the most consistently reviewed options available at its price, with critical scores across multiple vintages holding at 90–92 points on Wine-Searcher.
Tasting Notes
Pale gold with faint green glints at the rim. The nose opens with ripe white peach and fresh pineapple — tropical, but contained rather than exuberant. This is followed by a secondary note of citrus blossom and a faint trace of toasted hazelnut from the oak contact. On the palate, the entry is dry and precise, with a noticeable freshness driven by the high-altitude acidity that keeps the fruit from feeling heavy. The mid-palate settles into ripe green apple and a thread of vanilla cream, where the used French oak adds texture without dominance. There is no buttery weight here — the mouthfeel is lean and slightly unctuous rather than broad. The finish carries dried lemon peel and a subtle mineral chalky note that lingers for approximately 25–30 seconds. The defining quality of this wine is that restraint: it delivers Chardonnay’s fruit character without the oak-and-butter formula that many buyers in this category have grown tired of.
Food Pairing
Grilled kingfish, tilapia in lemon butter, and prawn dishes are natural partners. The wine’s acidity cuts through the richness of the sauce cleanly while its fruit weight matches the flavour of the fish. It also sits well alongside roast chicken, vegetable risotto, and mild soft cheeses. For a Nairobi gathering where the spread mixes seafood and lighter poultry dishes, this is a white that holds across the full table without demanding its own food course. Pour it well-chilled at around 10°C; at serving temperature any warmer, the tropical fruit notes flatten and the oak becomes more prominent than intended. Chardonnay accounts for approximately 15% of all white wine consumed globally. Its broad appeal makes this a safe choice for a mixed group of wine drinkers.
Description
A high-altitude Mendoza Chardonnay from one of Argentina’s oldest wine families. It is fruit-forward and lightly oaked, built for the white wine drinker who wants something with more structure than the entry-level shelf.
Rutini’s family first planted vines in this sub-region in 1925, making them pioneers of what is now widely regarded as Mendoza’s most exciting high-altitude winegrowing area. The Trumpeter Reserve range draws exclusively from these Uco Valley vineyards, which gives it a consistent cool-climate character uncommon at this price point. This is the step up from an everyday white — structured enough to hold its own at a dinner table but not so heavily oaked that it requires careful food matching. Buyers who find entry-level Chardonnay too flat, or heavily buttered California-style Chardonnay too overwhelming, consistently gravitate toward this style. Ideal for a Nairobi dinner party where the main course is fish, grilled chicken, or a creamy pasta and the mood calls for something thoughtful without being demanding.

About the Winery
Felipe Rutini, an Italian-born agricultural technician, founded Bodega La Rural in Coquimbito, Mendoza, in 1885, making it one of Argentina’s oldest continuously operating wine estates. His family planted the first vines in the Tupungato sub-region of the Uco Valley in 1925. This is decades before the area was recognised as one of South America’s most important high-altitude growing zones. Today, Rutini operates across 400 hectares spanning three distinct Uco Valley sites. These are Gualtallary at 1,500 metres, Altamira at 1,100 metres, and La Consulta at 970 metres, each contributing different textural and flavour profiles to the range. Head winemaker Mariano Di Paola has led production since 1994 and was recognised by Decanter in 2015 as one of the top 30 winemakers in the world. The modern winery at Tupungato, completed in 2009, uses gravity-flow processing and optical sorting — the first optical sorter installed in Argentina — and the estate holds certification under the Bodegas de Argentina Sustainability Protocol.
