Tasting Notes
Garnet red with violet reflections. The nose opens with plum and violet, with a spicy touch of liquorice and a little aniseed behind them. On the palate the black fruit is juicy, with blueberry and mulberry close to the centre. The tannins are fine grained and the acidity is balanced, so the wine stays lively. Cocoa and coffee from the barrel appear on the long finish, and the liquorice returns at the very end.
Food Pairing
Rutini recommends grilled and baked red meat, lamb, regional empanadas and mature cheeses. That fits the structure, because fine tannins and juicy acidity cut through fat and char. Beef short ribs and lamb chops are the strongest matches, and a mature cheddar or gouda works at the end of the meal. Serve at 14 to 17°C, which is slightly cool for a red. For a Nairobi nyama choma lunch where the beef is the centre of the table, this is a Malbec with enough fruit and grip to keep up.
What You Need to Know:
What does Rutini Dominio Malbec taste like?
Plum and violet with a spicy touch of liquorice, then juicy black fruit on the palate. Cocoa and coffee from the barrel show on the finish.
How is it different from Trumpeter Malbec?
Dominio comes from a single La Consulta site and spends 12 months in French oak. Trumpeter is made for easier, earlier drinking.
Should I drink this now or keep it?
It can be opened now, and the producer puts its ageing potential at 10 years. A young bottle benefits from 30 minutes of air before serving.
What food goes best with this wine?
Grilled and baked red meat, lamb and regional empanadas are the producer’s own suggestions. Mature cheeses also work.
How should I serve it?
Between 14 and 17°C, which is slightly cool for a red. Twenty minutes in the fridge from room temperature gets it there.
What should I do if this bottle is out of stock?
Our customer service team can help you find a suitable alternative or source the product where possible. Reach out before your event.

Description
Single variety Malbec from La Consulta in Argentina’s Uco Valley, aged 12 months in French oak. Order online in Nairobi through The Wine Box.
La Consulta sits at about 950 metres in the Uco Valley. Its vineyard was registered with Argentina’s National Institute of Viticulture in 1924, and the soils are alluvial loam and clay. Rutini says the site gives fruity, balanced wines, and it credits La Consulta for the liquorice note that runs through its Dominio Malbec.
The wine is made from Malbec alone and spends 12 months in French oak. Rutini’s note for the 2020 attributes the cocoa and coffee in the wine to medium toasted barrels. The producer puts the ageing potential at 10 years.
Earlier vintages have scored between 88 and 95 points, and the 2020 won 95 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards. For a Nairobi buyer who wants a Malbec from a named single site, with a score history and room to age, this is a clear step up from an everyday bottle. Best suited to grilled red meat dinners and to anyone building a small cellar.

About The Winery
Felipe Rutini, an Italian agricultural technician, founded Bodega La Rural in Mendoza in 1885, and the estate is one of Argentina’s oldest still in operation. The family later bought vineyards across the Uco Valley, including La Consulta, Gualtallary, Altamira and El Cepillo, each chosen for its altitude, soil and exposure. Mariano Di Paola has led winemaking since 1994, and Decanter named him one of the world’s top 30 winemakers in 2015. Rutini sells in over 60 countries. The wines are available through The Wine Box Kenya in Nairobi.
