Unlike the standard Beyerskloof Pinotage, made from younger vines and built for immediate, easy drinking, the Reserve draws on older bush vines and a longer, more patient oak programme to produce something with genuine depth and ageing potential. It sits just below Kriekbult in the estate’s hierarchy, sharing the same old-vine philosophy but sourced from a different site. For buyers in Kenya who want to move past entry-level Pinotage without committing to a single-vineyard bottle, this is the natural middle step at The Wine Box Kenya, from the estate most closely associated with the variety’s reputation internationally.

Tasting Notes

Deep, dark red through the glass, dense enough to hint at the low yields behind it. The nose opens with black fruit, blackberry and dark plum leading, layered with delicate cedar from the oak and a subtle spice that sits underneath rather than on top. A savoury, crushed-herb note lifts through the middle of the aromatics, adding a dimension the entry-level wine doesn’t carry. On the palate, the entry is powerful but never heavy, the structure built from genuinely concentrated fruit rather than extraction. Tannins are smooth and well integrated, framing a juicy core of black plum and mulberry that runs the length of the palate. The finish is long and fruit-driven, closing with a trace of dark chocolate that lingers well after the glass is empty. This is Pinotage with real ageing potential, built to reward patience as much as immediate drinking.

Food Pairing

This wine wants food with some weight and spice behind it. Cape Malay curry is the classic match, the wine’s fruit and spice standing up to the dish’s own layered heat without either side overwhelming the other. Lamb chops off the grill work just as well, the tannin structure cutting cleanly through the fat. For something unexpected, a dark chocolate soufflé at the end of the meal picks up the wine’s own chocolate note on the finish. For a Nairobi dinner where the menu has some ambition to it, this is a bottle built to keep pace rather than get left behind.

What You Need to Know:

How is this different from the standard Beyerskloof Pinotage?
The Reserve uses older, 26-year-old bush vines with lower yields and spends 12 months in French oak, compared to younger vines and a shorter programme for the standard bottling. The result is more concentration and genuine ageing potential.

Should I drink this now or hold it in a cellar?
Both work. It’s ready to enjoy on release, but the winemaker states it will develop well for up to 10 years, so there’s no pressure to open it immediately if you’d rather wait.

What food pairs best with this wine?
Cape Malay curry is the classic match, along with grilled lamb chops. A dark chocolate soufflé also works well at the end of a meal, picking up the wine’s own chocolate note on the finish.

Is this comparable to Kriekbult, or is one clearly better?
They sit close together in the estate’s range, both built from older bush vines with a similar philosophy. Kriekbult is single-vineyard and ages slightly longer in oak; the Reserve draws on Oakleaf soil fruit with a shorter, more restrained barrel programme. Both are serious steps up from the entry-level wine.

Description

Old bush vines, low yields and twelve months in French oak. The Reserve is Beyerskloof’s answer to what Pinotage looks like when the winery slows down and lets the fruit do the talking. Order online in Nairobi through The Wine Box.

The Reserve sits a step above the standard Beyerskloof Pinotage, and the vines explain why. This fruit comes from 26-year-old bush vines on the estate’s Oakleaf soils, old enough to produce noticeably lower yields, and lower yields tend to mean more concentration in the glass. The 2024 growing season made that concentration harder to earn than usual. An excellent winter gave the vines ideal rest, but heavy rain during budding brought disease pressure, and strong winds through October into mid-January hurt flowering and ultimately cut the yield further. What survived that season was small in volume but high in quality, exactly the kind of vintage that rewards a producer with the patience to wait it out.

Twelve months in second and third-fill French oak keeps the wood in a supporting role rather than the lead. That restraint is the whole point of the Reserve tier: concentrated fruit, elegant structure, nothing overworked. For a Nairobi buyer who already knows the entry-level Beyerskloof Pinotage and wants to see what the same producer does with more selective fruit and more patient winemaking, this is the bottle that answers that question directly.

About The Winery

Beyers Truter founded Beyerskloof in 1988, leaving his post as winemaker at Kanonkop to build an estate focused entirely on Pinotage. His son Anri Truter now leads winemaking, named Young Winemaker of the Year by Diners Club in 2012 for the estate’s flagship Diesel Pinotage. The estate covers 150 hectares in the Bottelary Hills district of Stellenbosch, one of South Africa’s most respected addresses for the variety. The family’s guiding principle has stayed the same across three decades: that the true character of a wine begins in the vineyard, long before it ever reaches the cellar.
