Beyerskloof Synergy Cape Blend 2024

Unlike a straight Pinotage, which can lean hard into rubber and acetone notes when the fruit or the winemaking isn’t quite right, Synergy uses Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to round off exactly those edges. The Shiraz addition is small but deliberate, adding spice that neither of the other three grapes bring on their own. For buyers in Kenya comparing South African red blends, this is one of the more thoughtfully built Cape Blends on the shelf, from a producer whose founder is widely credited with putting Pinotage back on the map in the first place.
Tasting Notes
Dark red with a ruby edge, the kind of colour that signals concentration before the glass even reaches the nose. The aromas arrive almost immediately: black cherry and plum lead, with a layer of sweet cedar from the French oak sitting just behind them. There’s a lift of spice too, that small Shiraz addition doing exactly what it’s there for. On the palate, the entry is juicy and full, the tannins soft and well integrated rather than gripping. What hits mid-palate is a run of black fruit and cherry, carried by a texture that feels rounded rather than sharp. The oak shows as a gentle sweetness rather than a dominant note, which is what twelve months in mostly older barrels does. The finish is soft, rounded and stays fruit driven right to the end, without any bitterness or drying sensation trailing behind it.
Food Pairing
Grilled or roasted red meat is where this wine belongs. Oxtail, leg of lamb and game dishes are the classic Beyerskloof pairings, and the soft tannins mean it doesn’t need a particularly fatty cut to soften up first. A boerewors braai works just as well, the spice from the Shiraz sitting comfortably against the char. Lasagna and other tomato-based baked dishes are an easier weeknight option that still does the wine justice. For a Nairobi table where the main course is the centrepiece and not an afterthought, this is the kind of red that holds its own without asking for a decant or a lecture first.
What You Need to Know:
What actually is a Cape Blend, and how is it different from a normal red blend?
A Cape Blend specifically includes Pinotage alongside other varieties, usually Bordeaux grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It’s a South African category built to give the country’s own grape a supporting structure it doesn’t always have alone.
Is this wine dry or does it have some sweetness?
Fully dry. The plum and cherry aromas read as ripe rather than sweet, and the finish closes clean without any residual sugar.
How does this compare to a straight Pinotage from the same producer?
Beyerskloof’s straight Pinotage leans harder into the grape’s own character, sometimes with more of that earthy, rubbery edge some drinkers either love or avoid. Synergy softens that with Cabernet and Merlot, so it’s an easier, more approachable entry point if you’re not sure about Pinotage yet.
What food works best with this bottle?
Oxtail, leg of lamb and game dishes are the classic match. A boerewors braai or a tomato-based lasagna both work well too, especially for a weeknight dinner rather than a formal occasion.
Do I need to decant this before serving?
Not necessary. The tannins are already soft after 12 months in mostly older French oak, so it drinks well straight from the bottle at 16 to 18°C.
What should I do if this bottle is out of stock?
Our customer service team can help you find a suitable alternative or source the product where possible. Reach out before your event.
Can I get this delivered in 1 hour in Nairobi?

Pinotage rarely shares the bottle. It’s usually the whole story, not a supporting act. Synergy does something different. It puts Pinotage’s dark fruit and fine spice next to the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon and the softness of Merlot, with a small amount of Shiraz added for its own spice and a mineral edge. That combination is what earns the name Cape Blend, a South African style built specifically to give Pinotage a frame it doesn’t have on its own.
The 2024 vintage came from one of the toughest harvests Beyerskloof has worked in years. Heavy rain through late February and March made timing the Merlot and Cabernet picks genuinely difficult, and the estate still ended up with an above-average yield and, in their own words, great wines in the cellar. That tension between a hard growing season and a strong result shows up in the glass. This is a wine for anyone who wants to understand Pinotage properly, not just taste it once and move on, and it works equally well for a Nairobi dinner where the main course needs a red with enough structure to keep up.

About The Winery
Beyers Truter founded Beyerskloof in 1988, leaving his post as winemaker at Kanonkop to build something entirely focused on Pinotage. He went on to become the first South African winemaker named Winemaker of the Year by the International Wine and Spirit Competition, a recognition that helped put South Africa’s own grape variety on the international map. The estate sits on 90 hectares in Stellenbosch, cooled by breezes off the nearby Atlantic. Today his daughter Anri Truter runs winemaking alongside Travis Langley, continuing a family approach built around one conviction: that the character of a wine starts in the vineyard, long before it reaches the cellar.
