Unlike most reposado tequila, sold in standard glass bottles and priced for mixing, Clase Azul comes in a genuinely hand-painted ceramic decanter, each one an individual piece rather than a mass-produced vessel. Unlike a blanco or añejo from the same brand, this reposado sits in the middle ground, more depth and warmth than an unaged spirit, more approachable and less oak-heavy than a longer-aged expression. For buyers in Kenya wanting a tequila that works equally well as a serious sipping spirit or as a considered gift, this is one of the most recognisable ultra-premium options at The Wine Box Kenya.

Tasting Notes

Gold in colour with bright yellow highlights, medium bodied in the glass. The nose opens woody and fruity, vanilla and toffee caramel leading, with a trace of candied orange peel and toasted oak underneath. On the palate, cooked agave carries through first, smooth rather than sharp, joined by more vanilla and toffee caramel that never tips into overwhelming sweetness. A light touch of cinnamon and hazelnut rounds out the mid-palate. The finish is long and warming, closing on soft oak spice with subtle mineral notes lingering underneath. This is a tequila built for slow sipping, layered enough to reward attention but never so intense that it demands it.

Serving Suggestions

This tequila is built to be sipped slowly rather than shot. Neat at room temperature is the classic way to take it, or over a single large ice cube if you’d prefer it slightly cooler without diluting the layered vanilla and caramel character. It also elevates a well-made Old Fashioned or a Tequila Sour if you want to mix it, though it holds up best on its own. Dark chocolate, caramel desserts and roasted nuts all pair naturally with the sweetness in the glass. For a Nairobi evening where the conversation is the main event, this is a bottle to pour slowly rather than pass around quickly.

What You Need to Know:

What makes Clase Azul different from other premium tequilas?
The hand-painted ceramic decanter is the most visible difference, each one an individual artisan piece rather than a standard bottle. The tequila itself was also one of the brands that established ultra-premium tequila as a real category, treating the spirit the way Cognac or single malt whisky is treated.

How does this compare to Don Julio 1942?
Both sit in the premium tequila category, but Clase Azul Reposado ages for 8 months in American oak, while Don Julio 1942 is an añejo aged a minimum of two and a half years. Clase Azul leans more dessert forward and approachable, while 1942 carries deeper caramel and oak complexity from its longer maturation.

Is this good for sipping neat, or is it meant for cocktails?
It’s built primarily for neat sipping. The 40% ABV and layered vanilla, caramel and agave character reward slow, attentive drinking, though it also works well in an Old Fashioned or Tequila Sour if you’d rather mix it.

What can I do with the decanter once the tequila is finished?
The ceramic decanter is designed to be kept afterward as a piece in its own right, hand-painted with a cobalt blue feathered design that many collectors display or repurpose rather than discard.

What should I do if this bottle is out of stock?
Our customer service team can help you find a suitable alternative or source the product where possible. Reach out before your event.

Can I get Clase Azul Reposado delivered same day in Nairobi?
Nairobi orders placed before 9 PM qualify for same-day delivery, typically completed within a 1-hour window. Free delivery applies to orders above KES 3,000 within Nairobi. Orders outside Nairobi are delivered nationwide across Kenya within 24 to 48 hours.

Description

A hand-painted ceramic decanter holding one of the most recognisable ultra-premium tequilas in the world. Aged eight months in American oak, this is the reposado that made luxury tequila a real category. Order online in Nairobi through The Wine Box.

Before Clase Azul, ultra-premium tequila barely existed as a category. Most tequila was priced and marketed as a shot, not a spirit to sit with slowly the way people treat aged whisky or Cognac. This reposado was one of the bottles that changed that. The agave comes from Los Altos, a highland region of Jalisco where iron rich red clay soil and high altitude push more sugar into the plant, and each piña spends a full 72 hours cooking in a traditional stone oven before fermentation even begins.

Eight months in American oak gives the spirit its colour and its signature warmth without pushing it toward the deeper, more oak-dominant character of an añejo. The result sits closer to a dessert in a glass than a typical reposado, vanilla and toffee caramel layered over cooked agave, held in a decanter that’s genuinely hand-painted rather than simply branded. For a Nairobi buyer looking for something to sip slowly rather than mix into a quick cocktail, or for a gift that doubles as a piece worth keeping after the bottle’s empty, this is one of the more distinctive spirits available.

About The Distillery

Arturo Lomelí founded Clase Azul in Guadalajara in 1997, when he was 23 years old and running a bar in the city. An earlier attempt at his own tequila brand had failed, and he went back to study marketing before returning to the spirit with a different approach, treating tequila with the same respect the French give Cognac or the Scots give single malt. The hand-painted ceramic decanter became the clearest expression of that idea, each one produced by artisans in the small town of Santa María Canchesda rather than mass manufactured. Nearly three decades later, Clase Azul México operates in more than 100 countries under the direction of Master Distiller Viridiana Tinoco, continuing Lomelí’s original focus on craftsmanship over volume. The range is available through The Wine Box in Kenya.
