Unlike single-estate Albariños from Val do Salnés where granitic soils and Atlantic proximity produce a cooler, more saline and austere style — CUNE Albariño draws from three distinct soil types across Condado do Tea. The result is a more textured, rounder expression of the variety without sacrificing the mineral finish that defines quality Rías Baixas. Furthermore, unlike most entry-level Albariños produced from purchased fruit at large cooperatives, this wine is sourced exclusively from La Val’s own 90 hectares — estate-grown, with direct control over yields and harvest timing. For buyers in Nairobi and Kenya comparing Spanish white wines, this is consequently the label with the deepest producer pedigree in The Wine Box Kenya’s current Spanish white range two founding institutions of their respective regions in one bottle.
Tasting notes
The 2024 CUNE Albariño shows a pale lemon green colour with a bright silver rim, reflecting its fresh stainless steel style and absence of oak influence.
On the nose, it is expressive and layered, opening with white peach and ripe Granny Smith apple, followed by hints of white grapefruit and lemon zest. A short period of skin contact adds extra aromatic lift, bringing gentle notes of orange blossom and a faint touch of fennel that gives the wine a subtle savoury edge.
The palate is dry, fresh and precise. Lively acidity carries the fruit beautifully, giving the wine a clean, mouthwatering feel without becoming sharp. Flavours of white peach, ripe pear, citrus and green apple come through clearly, supported by a lightly textured mouthfeel that gives the wine more weight than many unoaked whites.
The finish is mineral and refreshing, with a stony character, a light saline note and a gentle varietal bitterness that fades into a clean citrus and wet stone aftertaste. Overall, the 2024 vintage is defined by balance. It brings together ripe fruit, bright acidity, texture and freshness in a very polished style.
Food Pairing
The saline mineral finish and bright citrus acidity of this Albariño point precisely to seafood with natural brine. Fresh oysters and grilled prawns are the strongest structural matches. The wine’s acidity mirrors a squeeze of lemon over shellfish with more complexity than citrus alone delivers. Pan-seared sea bream, grilled calamari and light crab dishes follow the same structural logic. The pellicular maceration adds enough texture to hold alongside soft fresh cheeses and light fish pâtés without competing. Additionally, the wine’s aromatic profile handles mildly herb-seasoned preparations well — anything with lemon, fennel or parsley is a natural pairing. For a Nairobi sundowner or an outdoor lunch where the food is light and the glass needs to stay cold, this is consequently the bottle that works from aperitif through to the first course.
What You Need to Know:
What does Albariño taste like and is it similar to Sauvignon Blanc?
Albariño delivers white peach, ripe apple, citrus and a characteristic saline mineral finish from Atlantic-influenced granite soils. It is softer and more textured on the nose than Sauvignon Blanc, with less of the aggressive green herb and gooseberry character — a natural alternative for buyers who find Sauvignon Blanc too sharp.
Is this wine dry or does it have residual sweetness?
Fully dry at 12.5% ABV with no residual sugar. The ripe white peach and apple aromas can read as sweet on the nose, but the palate closes with citrus, mineral and a faint pleasant bitterness that is the variety’s signature.
What makes this Albariño different from other Rías Baixas examples?
Most entry-level Albariño is produced from purchased fruit at large cooperatives. This wine is sourced exclusively from La Val’s own 90 hectares across three soil types which are; granite, alluvium and schist each contributing a distinct quality to the blend. That multi-estate, estate-grown structure is uncommon at this price point.
What food works best with this wine?
Fresh oysters, grilled prawns and pan-seared sea bream are the strongest matches. The saline acidity cuts through brine and seafood fat directly. Additionally, soft fresh cheeses and herb-seasoned light fish dishes work well alongside a chilled glass.
Is Albariño a wine to drink young or can I hold this for a few years?
Drink it young. The aromatic lift from the 4-hour skin maceration and the primary fruit character of the 2024 vintage are at their best within 2 to 3 years of harvest. Holding beyond 2027 will dull both the aromatics and the citrus drive that define the wine.

Description
A three-estate Rías Baixas Albariño from one of Galicia’s founding wineries, now available at The Wine Box Kenya in Nairobi. Three distinct soil types — granite, alluvium and schist — produce a single wine with more aromatic range and palate complexity than most single-site Albariños at this price point.
Rías Baixas is Spain’s leading white wine region, best known for Albariño, which makes up over 90% of its vineyards. But Albariño from this region can vary depending on where it is grown. La Val comes from Condado do Tea, an inland and higher-altitude sub-zone that produces a riper, fuller style than the cooler, saltier Val do Salnés area. What makes La Val stand out is that it blends grapes from three different estates. Taboexa, the highest estate, brings freshness and acidity from sandy granite soils. Arantei adds ripe fruit and a rounder texture from alluvial soils and pebbles. Vilachán contributes minerality and a gentle saline note from schist soils.
Together, these three sites create an Albariño with freshness, ripe fruit, texture, and a distinct mineral character.

About The Winery
Bodegas La Val was established in Salvaterra de Miño, within the Condado do Tea sub zone of Rías Baixas, in 1985. It was one of the first wineries to produce Albariño commercially at scale and played an important role in the creation of the DO Rías Baixas classification.
The estate controls 90 hectares across Condado do Tea and O Rosal, with vineyards planted on granite, alluvial and schist soils. These different soil types give La Val a strong foundation for its multi estate blending approach, bringing together freshness, fruit concentration, texture and mineral character. In March 2023, La Val was acquired by CVNE, one of Spain’s most respected wine groups. Founded in Haro, Rioja in 1879 by brothers Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa, CVNE has built a reputation for quality across several leading Spanish wine regions. The group was named Spanish Wine Producer of the Year by IWSC in 2015 and now operates eight wineries across Spain, including Roger Goulart in Cava and Viña Real in Rioja.
CUNE Albariño marks the first step in CVNE’s investment in the La Val estate. It combines the heritage of one of Rías Baixas’ founding independent wineries with CVNE’s production expertise and distribution strength. The 2024 vintage is available in Kenya through The Wine Box.
