This estate blend draws on two different areas of Montalcino to produce something more approachable while still carrying the structure Brunello is known for. It also gives a fuller picture of what Gaja is doing in Tuscany than either single-vineyard wine can on its own, since it pulls character from both the southern and northeastern sides of the appellation. For winelovers wanting to try Gaja’s Tuscan project without the price tag of the top single-vineyard releases, this is the most accessible route into that story at The Wine Box.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby in the glass with real depth even at this stage of its life. The nose opens with flint and mineral notes first, then sweet spice, nutmeg in particular, before citrusy bergamot and delicate floral tones come through, rosehip sitting somewhere underneath it all. On the palate the entry is sweet and juicy, medium to full in body, with a warmth that carries a slightly piquant edge through the middle. Ripe plum runs through the fruit core, savory rather than jammy, and the finish is long and persistent without tipping into heaviness. The acidity keeps everything balanced against the structure, so nothing feels out of proportion even this early on. This is a wine that already shows plenty, but it clearly has more to give with time in the bottle.

Food Pairing

This is a wine built for the classic Tuscan table. Bistecca alla Fiorentina, the region’s signature grilled steak, is the obvious match, the wine’s structure and acidity cutting straight through the char and fat. Wild boar ragù, slow-braised lamb and other rich, tomato-based dishes work along the same lines. A hard, aged pecorino at the end of the meal picks up the wine’s savory edge without fighting it. For a Nairobi dinner where the meal has some weight and the wine needs to keep pace, this is a bottle that holds its own without needing anything too elaborate around it.

What You Need to Know:

Is this the same as the Gaja wines from Piedmont?
No. This comes from Pieve Santa Restituta, Gaja’s estate in Montalcino, Tuscany, made entirely from Sangiovese rather than the Nebbiolo used in the family’s Barolo and Barbaresco wines.

How is this different from Gaja’s Rennina or Sugarille Brunellos?
Rennina and Sugarille are both single-vineyard wines built for long cellaring at a higher price point. This is the estate blend, combining fruit from those same southern vineyards with grapes from Torrenieri in the northeast, making it the more accessible entry into the range.

Should I drink this now or wait?
It can be enjoyed now, but it has the structure to continue developing through to around 2035 with proper storage. It’s already showing well, so there’s no need to rush it either way.

What food pairs best with this wine?
Bistecca alla Fiorentina is the classic match. Wild boar ragù, slow-braised lamb and a hard aged pecorino also work well against the wine’s structure and savory character.

Is Brunello di Montalcino the same grape as Chianti?
Both are made from Sangiovese, but Brunello di Montalcino uses a specific clone and much stricter ageing rules, producing a bolder, longer-lived wine than most Chianti.

What should I do if this bottle is out of stock?

Can I get Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello delivered same day in Nairobi?
Nairobi orders placed before 9 PM qualify for same-day delivery, typically completed within a 1-hour window. Free delivery applies to orders above KES 3,000 within Nairobi. Orders outside Nairobi are delivered nationwide across Kenya within 24 to 48 hours.

Description

A blend across two very different sides of Montalcino, from a producer more commonly associated with Piedmont than Tuscany. This is Gaja’s entry point into the Brunello range, drawing structure from one soil and warmth from another. Order online in Nairobi through The Wine Box for fast delivery.

Most of what people know about Gaja comes from Piedmont, but the estate has held vineyards in Montalcino since 1994, and this wine is where that side of the operation starts. Rather than relying on a single site, it blends fruit from Rennina and Sugarille in the south, both sitting on clay-calcareous soil rich in galestro, with grapes from Torrenieri in the northeast, where the ground is a mix of clay, silt and sand. Those two areas don’t behave the same way in the glass. The southern sites tend to give structure and mineral tension, while Torrenieri brings a rounder, warmer character, and blending across both is what gives this wine its balance rather than leaning too far in either direction.

Each parcel is fermented and macerated separately for around three weeks before the wines are blended and aged together for 24 months in oak. That separate handling lets each site express itself fully before it’s folded into the final wine, rather than compressing everything into one fermentation from the start. For a Nairobi buyer who wants to try a Gaja wine without committing to the price of one of the estate’s single-vineyard bottlings, this is the version built specifically to be the entry point into that reputation.

About The Winery

Angelo Gaja took over his family’s estate in Barbaresco in 1961, having inherited a winery that had been producing wine there since 1859, and spent the following decades reshaping how Piedmont wine was made and perceived internationally. In 1994 the family expanded into Tuscany, acquiring Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino, a property built around a parish church dating back to the 4th century. Two years later they added a second Tuscan estate, Ca’ Marcanda in Bolgheri. Angelo’s children, Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni, now represent the fifth generation working across the family’s properties in both Piedmont and Tuscany. The wines are available through The Wine Box.
