Unlike Gaja’s Barbaresco DOCG, which is 100% Nebbiolo and demands years of cellaring, this 50/50 Nebbiolo-Barbera blend is built for earlier drinking. The Barbera adds acidity and rounder fruit that pure Nebbiolo rarely shows at this age. That makes it the right bottle for buyers who want the Gaja name and Piedmont terroir without the patience required for their top-tier wines. It is one of the most awarded Langhe DOC wines available in Nairobi.

Tasting Notes

Red cherry and blackberry lead the aroma, followed by violet, white pepper and a trace of graphite. The palate entry is medium to full-bodied. Nebbiolo’s fine-grained tannins arrive first, then Barbera’s brighter acidity lifts the mid-palate into blood orange and wild herb. Time in used oak barrels leaves a faint trace of cedar and spice rather than overt vanilla. The close signs off with a long, mineral finish where dried rose petal and leather linger for roughly 45 seconds. What separates this from entry-level Langhe wines is the integration: the two varieties complement rather than compete.

Food Pairing

Braised beef short rib or osso buco are the strongest matches. The fine tannins cut through the collagen and fat without gripping the palate. It also works beside aged pecorino or a mushroom risotto. For a Nairobi evening where the menu is rich and the conversation runs long, this is the bottle that keeps its shape from the first pour to the last glass.

What You Need to Know:

I normally drink Gaja Barbaresco. How does Sito Moresco compare in the glass?
If Barbaresco is your reference, expect less tannic grip and more open fruit. The 50% Barbera adds acidity and rounder cherry notes that pure Nebbiolo rarely shows at this age, while the Nebbiolo still provides the structure and mineral finish.
Is this a wine to drink now or should I cellar it?
It can be drunk now with an hour of decanting, but the structure supports aging until 2037. The 14% ABV and fine tannins give it the backbone to evolve, while the Barbera keeps it approachable young.
When is the right occasion to open Sito Moresco?
Open it at a dinner where the food is rich and the conversation matters — braised beef, aged cheese, or a special occasion where you want a wine with pedigree but not the austerity of a top-tier Barbaresco.
Which dishes bring out the Nebbiolo-Barbera blend best?
Braised beef short rib or osso buco are the strongest matches. The fine tannins cut through collagen and fat. It also works with aged pecorino or mushroom risotto.
Should I decant this wine before serving?
Decant for one hour if drinking now. The air softens the Nebbiolo tannins and opens the violet and spice aromas. If cellaring, store at 16°C and open in 5 to 10 years.
Would this work as a gift for a serious wine collector?
Yes, the 1859 estate pedigree, the 95-point scores from James Suckling and Decanter, and the Gaja name give it credibility. It suits anyone who collects Piedmont wines but has not yet explored the estate’s Langhe range.
What happens if Sito Moresco 2023 is out of stock?
Our customer service team can help you find a suitable alternative or source the product where possible.
Q: How fast can I get Sito Moresco delivered in Nairobi?
Nairobi orders placed before 9 PM qualify for same-day delivery, typically completed within a 1-hour window. Free delivery applies to orders above KES 3,000 within Nairobi. Orders outside Nairobi are delivered nationwide across Kenya within 24 to 48 hours.

Description

A garnet Langhe blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera with red cherry and mineral depth. This is the Piedmont red Nairobi collectors reach for when Barbaresco feels too serious.

The Sito Moresco vineyard is a 10-hectare site in Barbaresco that the Gaja family purchased in 1979. The name means “Moresco’s site”; a nod to the previous owner. First vinified in 1991, the wine was Angelo Gaja’s entry into a new class: an everyday Langhe that still carried the family’s signature. At 14% ABV and with time in barriques, it has the backbone to age past 2030, yet the tannins are fine enough to drink now with an hour of air.

About The Winery

Giovanni Gaja founded the estate in 1859 in Barbaresco with two hectares of vineyard. The family had arrived from Spain in the 17th century and began by serving their wine in a local tavern. It was Angelo Gaja, great-grandson of the founder, who transformed the estate beginning in 1961. He introduced green harvest, single-vineyard bottlings, French barriques, and malolactic fermentation to a region that had changed little in a century. In 1979, the family purchased the Pajorè vineyard in Treiso. This site would become Sito Moresco, named for its previous owner. Since 2020, the wine has been a 50/50 blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera from selected parcels in Barbaresco and Barolo. Today, the estate is run by Angelo’s children and produces 350,000 bottles annually across Piedmont, Tuscany and Bolgheri. At The Wine Box, we stock this as part of a range that brings one of Italy’s most documented producer pedigrees within reach.
