Unlike most Provence rosés, where Grenache Noir and Cinsault produce a soft and broadly fruity style, Gris Blanc uses Grenache Gris as its primary variety. That gives it a paler colour, a more restrained aromatic character and a stony minerality that Provence seldom delivers at this price point. The pale colour also comes naturally from the grape itself rather than from limiting skin contact of a red variety, so there is no timing trick behind it. For buyers in Kenya comparing dry rosé options at The Wine Box Kenya, this is the most technically specific and the most award-documented pale rosé in the range.

Tasting Notes

Very pale pink in the glass, with grey and white tints that make it look more like a white wine than a rosé at first glance. The nose is gentle and specific. Cranberry and strawberry open first. Pink grapefruit pith and a faint lemon zest note follow. There is a stony, slightly earthy minerality underneath all of that, the kind of character that comes from Tautavel soil rather than from the winemaking, and it adds a savoury dimension that keeps the wine from reading as purely fruity. On the palate it is dry and light. A faint natural prickle gives it an extra lift that makes the fruit feel more vivid on each sip. Cranberry and ripe strawberry carry through the mid-palate. The finish is short, clean and mineral. There is no weight here, no oak, no ambition to be anything other than what it is: a precise, refreshing dry rosé that does not overstay its welcome.

Food Pairing

Keep the food light and the bottle cold. Grilled prawns, fresh oysters and baked white fish are the best matches. The wine’s citrus acidity does the same job as a squeeze of lemon over seafood, but with more interest. Mediterranean salads, sushi and lighter Thai dishes also sit naturally alongside a chilled glass. The winemaker specifically recommends Thai curry and tagines, which is a useful signal: this wine handles mild spice better than most pale rosés at this weight. For a Nairobi aperitif or a relaxed outdoor lunch, it is the kind of bottle you open first and refill quietly before anyone notices how much has gone. Serve at 10 to 12°C and drink it young. The aromatics that make it worth buying are at their best right now.

What you Need to Know

Is this wine sweet? Most rosés I have tried have been too sweet for me.
Fully dry at 13% ABV with no residual sugar. The strawberry and cranberry aromas can read as sweet on the nose, but the palate closes with citrus pith and wet stone rather than sweetness.

What makes Grenache Gris different from regular Grenache? Why does the colour look so pale?
Grenache Gris is a natural genetic mutation of Grenache Noir with pale pinkish skins. The near-white colour comes from the grape itself rather than any winemaking technique, which is why this wine looks and tastes closer to a white wine than a conventional rosé.

How is this different from a Provence rosé?
Provence rosés are typically built on Grenache Noir and Cinsault for a softer, rounder profile. Gris Blanc uses Grenache Gris for a paler colour and more restrained aromatics, with a stony minerality that Provence seldom delivers at this price point.

What food works best with this wine?
Grilled prawns, fresh oysters and baked white fish are the strongest matches. Mediterranean salads, sushi and mildly spiced Thai dishes also work well alongside a chilled glass.

Is this a good gift for someone who prefers white wine but drinks rosé occasionally?
Yes. The very pale colour and dry mineral palate make it one of the most accessible rosés for white wine drinkers. The Guide Hachette star and Silver Medal from the Concours Mondial give it credibility as a considered gift rather than a generic choice.

What should I do if this bottle is out of stock?

About the Winery

Gérard Bertrand took over the family estate, Château de Villemajou in the Corbières, in 1987 at the age of 22, following the sudden accidental death of his father Georges. He had harvested his first grapes alongside his father in 1975 at age 10. In 1992, he founded the Gérard Bertrand wine company with the specific mission of elevating the international reputation of Languedoc, then primarily known as a source of bulk table wine. He simultaneously pursued a professional rugby career, captaining Stade Français before retiring in 1994 to concentrate fully on wine. Biodynamic conversion began at Domaine de Cigalus in 2002 and has since extended across all 16 estates in the portfolio. By 2024, 830 of his 930 hectares held Demeter biodynamic certification; making Gérard Bertrand the largest single producer of certified biodynamic wine in the world. The house now exports to more than 170 countries, with the Gris Blanc range available through The Wine Box in Kenya.
