Unlike classic London Dry gin, Kokoro leans into sansho berry for pepper, citrus-pine lift and Japanese culinary character. It suits adult gin drinkers who want a spirit with a clear botanical signature rather than a neutral mixer base. Within premium gin in Kenya, its Afan Woodland sansho link gives it a specific point of difference.

Tasting Notes

Piney juniper and lemon peel open the nose, followed by sweet orange, coriander seed and a faint liquorice root note. On the palate, sansho brings cracked black pepper, citrus-pith lift and a forest-floor edge; almond gives the mid-palate a gentle roundness, while angelica root keeps the structure dry. The finish carries orange zest, pepper spice and pine resin for a clean, savoury close that lasts beyond the first sip.

Food Pairing

Sushi, grilled prawns, smoked fish and citrus-led canapés sit naturally beside Kokoro’s sansho spice and juniper structure. It can also work beside light savoury snacks, peppered chicken skewers or seafood starters at a Nairobi dinner party. This Japanese Gin has enough botanical intensity to hold its shape in tonic-led serves without disappearing into the mixer.

Description

Kokoro Gin 0.75L is a Japanese-inspired London Dry Gin with sansho berry, juniper, citrus peel, coriander and peppery forest spice.

Sansho berry gives Kokoro its defining identity. The berry is sourced from Afan Woodland in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, and is known for a peppery, citrus-pine profile that is widely used in Japanese cuisine.

The recipe combines sansho with eight supporting botanicals, including juniper, lemon peel, sweet orange, almond, angelica root, liquorice, savoury and coriander seed. Best suited for adult gin drinkers comparing Japanese-inspired spirits, Kokoro offers a clear alternative to floral gin or heavily citrus-led London Dry styles.

About Kokoro Gin

Kokoro was inspired by James Nicol’s 2014 encounter with sansho berries through his uncle, C.W. Nicol, who lived in Japan for over 50 years and was closely associated with Afan Woodland. The brand name means “heart” or “essence” in Japanese, reflecting the role of the forest-grown berry in the gin’s identity. The recipe builds around sansho rather than treating it as a garnish, supported by juniper, citrus peel, almond, angelica, liquorice, savoury and coriander. Kokoro also donates 10% of profit from every sale to the C.W. Nicol Afan Woodland Trust.
