Sadie Skurfberg 2025

Unlike most Chenin Blanc, made for early, fresh drinking, Skurfberg is built with real structure and ageing potential, closer in seriousness to a top white Burgundy than to an everyday South African white. The whole bunch pressing, natural fermentation and extended lees ageing all add layers of complexity that faster, more commercial winemaking simply doesn’t produce. For buyers in Kenya wanting to experience what old vine, site-specific South African Chenin Blanc can achieve at its highest level, this is one of the most serious white wines available at The Wine Box.
Tasting Notes
Deep gold in the glass, richer in colour than most Chenin Blanc, a sign of the fruit concentration this site is known for. The nose is intense and savoury rather than simply fruity, oily and resinous notes of grapefruit and peach skin typically leading, with Granny Smith apple, lanolin and a mineral edge running underneath. On the palate the entry is full and dense, driven by firm acidity that keeps the weight from ever feeling heavy. Layers of stone fruit and citrus carry through the mid-palate, framed by a saline, mineral finish that speaks directly to the sandstone soil beneath the vines. This is a wine built for real ageing rather than immediate drinking, structured and compact even in its youth, with the kind of tension that tends to unfold slowly over a decade or more in the cellar.
Food Pairing
This wine’s density and savoury character call for food with real presence. Roast chicken with lemon and herbs is a natural match, the wine’s acidity and mineral edge cutting through the richness of the dish. Grilled langoustine or a rich seafood stew also work well, given the wine’s textural weight. Hard, aged cheeses, particularly something nutty like an aged Gouda, complement the lees-driven complexity in the glass. For a Nairobi dinner where the meal has genuine ambition, this is a white built to hold its own against food that would overwhelm a lighter, simpler Chenin Blanc.
What You Need to Know:
Is this Chenin Blanc dry or does it carry any sweetness?
Fully dry. The rich, textured character can suggest sweetness, but Skurfberg is fermented completely dry, with the density coming from concentration and lees ageing rather than residual sugar.
Should I drink this now or hold it in a cellar?
Hold it if you can. This wine is built for real ageing, with a drinking window that has historically stretched from around two years post-vintage through to 2040 and beyond in strong years. It’s structured to reward patience.
What makes Skurfberg different from other South African Chenin Blanc?
The site itself. Skurfberg is one of the most remote, low-yielding vineyard areas Sadie works with, on decomposed sandstone soils that force old vines to produce highly concentrated fruit. Combined with natural fermentation and 12 months on lees, the result is far more structured than most Chenin Blanc.
What food pairs best with this wine?
Roast chicken with lemon and herbs is a strong match, along with grilled langoustine or a rich seafood stew. Hard, aged cheeses also complement the wine’s lees-driven complexity.

Description
Old vine Chenin Blanc from a mountain whose name literally means rugged in Afrikaans, grown on decomposed sandstone in one of South Africa’s most remote and demanding vineyard sites. Order online in Nairobi through The Wine Box.
Skurfberg means rugged mountain in Afrikaans, and the name isn’t decorative. This is one of the most remote, difficult vineyard sites Eben Sadie works with, up in the Clanwilliam mountains where rainfall is thin, drought is a regular threat, and yields can drop to a third of a normal year when conditions turn against the vines. The soil underneath is decomposed Table Mountain sandstone, extremely well drained and unforgiving, which forces the old Chenin Blanc vines to work hard for every bunch they produce.
That struggle is exactly what gives Skurfberg its reputation. Sadie whole bunch presses the fruit, then lets it ferment naturally in old foudres rather than pushing it with cultured yeast, before resting the wine on its lees for a full year before bottling it unfiltered. Nothing here is rushed. In strong vintages the result has been scored as high as 96 points by The Wine Advocate, described as a wine essentially made for longevity. For a Nairobi buyer looking for a serious, age-worthy Chenin Blanc from one of South Africa’s most respected and uncompromising winemakers, this is one of the most technically demanding wines in the country’s white wine category.

About The Winery
Eben Sadie founded his winery in the Swartland in the early 2000s, building a reputation around old, dry-farmed bush vines and a refusal to rely on irrigation or heavy cellar intervention. His Old Vine Series set out to identify and preserve South Africa’s oldest and most distinctive vineyard sites, many of them planted decades earlier and nearly lost to neglect or replanting, treating each one as a wine in its own right rather than blending them into something more generic. Sadie’s work has been widely credited with reshaping how the world views South African wine, moving the conversation away from bulk production toward site-specific, low-intervention winemaking. The wines are available through The Wine Box Kenya in Nairobi.
