Twiswind means to argue with the wind in Afrikaans, and the name comes directly from the site itself, a southwest facing slope of the Paardeberg that catches near constant, relentless wind. Most winemakers would avoid a site like that. Eben Sadie chose it deliberately, planting twelve different grape varieties together in the same ground rather than growing them separately and blending afterward. As he’s put it himself, the idea was to plant a blend rather than make one, so the finished wine reflects a genuine mixed vineyard rather than a winemaker’s decision made later in the cellar.
The project behind Twiswind goes back to 2002, when Sadie began selecting varieties specifically suited to a hotter, drier future for the Swartland, focusing on grapes that close their leaf pores early to conserve water under drought stress. Twiswind and its sister vineyard Sonvang are the first wines from that two-decade project to reach bottle, and both are still young vines, co-harvested and co-fermented as one field blend from the very start rather than assembled piece by piece. About The Winery
Eben Sadie founded his winery in the Swartland in the early 2000s, building his reputation on old, dry farmed bush vines and a deliberate avoidance of irrigation or heavy cellar intervention. Beyond preserving South Africa’s oldest vineyards through his Old Vine Series, Sadie has spent over two decades developing new plantings on his own Paardeberg farm, selecting Mediterranean and Iberian varieties specifically suited to a hotter, drier future. Twiswind and Sonvang are the first results of that long-term project to reach bottle. Sadie’s work has been widely credited with reshaping international perception of South African wine, shifting the conversation from bulk production toward site-specific, low-intervention winemaking.
