Tasting Notes

Pale salmon with a faint copper shimmer. The nose is immediate. Wild strawberry and watermelon rise first, then a trace of rose petal and pink grapefruit pith. With air, a chalky, almost saline note appears beneath the fruit. This is the Uco Valley signature.
The attack is crisp. Bright acidity carries redcurrant and cranberry across the tongue with no residual sugar to soften the edges. The mid palate fills out slightly. Two months on lees adds a whisper of texture, not weight. The close is clean and short. Citrus peel and wet stone. Fifteen seconds, then gone. This is not a wine for contemplation. It is a wine for the second glass, poured while the first is still half full.

Food Pairing

The acidity and dry finish make this versatile. Grilled prawns with lemon and chilli are the strongest match. The citrus in the wine mirrors the lemon. The heat of the chilli finds no sweetness to clash with. Goat cheese salad, sushi, and watermelon with feta all work. The wine does not compete. It refreshes.
In Nairobi, this suits afternoons that run long. Poolside lunches in Lavington. Sunday braai starters in Karen. Baby showers in Kilimani where not everyone wants white or red. The screwcap means no corkscrew hunt. The price means no anxiety if a bottle gets knocked over. Serve at 8 to 10°C.

What You Need to Know

How does this compare to Provence rosé?
Paler than many Provence examples, with more red berry and less mineral austerity. The Malbec gives strawberry and watermelon rather than the grapefruit and white peach of Grenache-based Provence. It is drier than most entry-level Provence and significantly less expensive.
Is this wine sweet?
No. Less than 4 grams of residual sugar per litre. The bright acidity and absence of oak or lees contact make it taste even drier. If you are used to blush or white Zinfandel, this will feel tart.
What food pairs with this rose?
Anything light and fresh. Grilled seafood, salads with vinaigrette, goat cheese, sushi. Avoid heavy cream sauces or red meat. The wine lacks the body and tannin to stand up to either.
Why Malbec for rosé?
Most Argentine rosé uses Bonarda or Syrah. Malbec is unconventional. It gives more colour and more berry intensity. San Felipe chose it to differentiate from the flood of pale, neutral pink on the market. The result is a rosé with actual flavour.
Does the screwcap matter?
For a wine meant to be drunk young, yes. No cork taint. No oxidation. Consistent freshness from the first bottle to the last. The screwcap is the correct closure for this style and price point.
What if this is out of stock?

Yes. Orders placed before 9 PM qualify for same-day delivery, typically within one hour. Free delivery applies above KES 3,000 within Nairobi. We also deliver nationwide across Kenya within 24 to 48 hours.

Description

Malbec rosé is uncommon. Most Argentine pink wine comes from Bonarda or Syrah. San Felipe deliberately chose Malbec, sourcing from their Uco Valley estate at 1,200 metres. The altitude matters. Cool nights slow ripening and lock in acidity that lower sites lose by harvest. The result is a rosé with more red berry intensity and structural grip than the typical pale, anonymous pink.
The 2024 vintage in Mendoza delivered exactly what this style requires. Warm days developed sugar and colour. Cold nights preserved malic acid and aromatic compounds. The winemaking is deliberately hands off. Night harvesting prevents oxidation. Direct pressing limits extraction. Stainless steel fermentation locks in primary fruit. There is no oak, no malolactic, no batonnage. What remains is Malbec stripped to its essentials.

About The Winery

The story begins in the early 1900s, when Italian immigrants were still arriving in Mendoza with grapevines wrapped in damp cloth rather than suitcases. San Felipe was among the first wineries to bottle wine commercially in the region, before Argentina had roads reliable enough to guarantee a delivery. The house survived the country’s political turbulence by making wine that working-class Buenos Aires would buy by the crate. The Uco Valley estate came later, acquired when the family realised that altitude, not marketing, would determine who survived the next century.
For buyers in Kenya, that stubborn simplicity is the point. A wine that tastes the same in a Nairobi garden as it does on a Mendoza terrace, bottled under screwcap, priced for regular drinking. No pretension. No cellar required. Just fruit, altitude and the patience to pick at night.
