About the Distillery
The Balvenie distillery is located in Dufftown, Speyside, Scotland. It is renowned for its commitment to traditional craftsmanship and is one of the few distilleries in Scotland that still grows its own barley and maintains traditional floor maltings. The distillery’s dedication to the five rare crafts of whisky-making (growing barley, malting barley, mashing, distilling, and coopering) sets it apart in the industry.
How this product is made
The Balvenie 14 Year Old Caribbean Cask starts its maturation in traditional oak casks, which is standard for most single malt Scotch whiskies. However, what makes this expression unique is its additional maturation in Caribbean rum casks.
After spending a minimum of 14 years in traditional oak casks, the whisky is transferred to oak barrels that previously held Caribbean rum. During this finishing period, which can last several months, the whisky interacts with the residual rum and absorbs some of its flavors and aromas. This process contributes additional layers of sweetness, spiciness, and tropical fruit notes to the whisky.
Technical Details
Nose: Rich honey, toffee, and tropical fruit notes, with hints of vanilla and oak.
Palate: Creamy, with flavors of dried fruits, nutmeg, cinnamon, and a touch of ginger. The rum influence brings out notes of caramel and ripe bananas.
Finish: Sweet and smooth, with lingering spices and a gentle warmth.
