Unlike Cabernet Sauvignon which carries firmer, more angular tannins and often needs food with significant fat content to open up, Trumpeter Malbec is approachable from the first pour without decanting or careful food matching. And unlike cheaper, lower-altitude Malbecs that deliver jammy, one-dimensional fruit, the Uco Valley origin and that distinctive oregano-and-spice herbal signature give this bottle a flavour identity that is specific and repeatable vintage to vintage. For buyers in Nairobi looking for an Argentinian red wine that works as a crowd-pleaser without reading as generic, the Trumpeter Malbec has the producer pedigree and the altitude story to justify the step up from the entry-level shelf.

Tasting Notes

Deep violet-red in the glass, almost ink-dark at the centre with a bright purple rim that signals the wine’s youth and altitude. The nose is immediate and aromatic: sun-dried plum and ripe black cherry lead, followed by a distinctive herbal thread dried oregano, a whisper of thyme. This is characteristic of high-altitude Uco Valley Malbec and absent from warmer, lower-elevation examples. Behind that, cardamom and a trace of cinnamon from the oak. On the palate, the entry is full and rounded, the tannins present but approachable. It is grainy rather than gripping, dissolving quickly into the mid-palate. Black cherry, boysenberry, and a core of cassis carry through the middle, lifted by the acidity that the altitude preserves. The American oak contributes a faint vanilla sweetness at the back; the French oak keeps the structure from going soft. The finish is persistent with dark plum skin, a flicker of black pepper, and the herbal note returning cleanly for around 35–40 seconds. What separates this from a flat, one-dimensional entry-level Malbec is that herbal and spice signature: this wine smells and tastes like it came from somewhere specific.

Food Pairing

Trumpeter Malbec carries rounded, mid-weight tannins and a fruit-forward profile with spice from partial oak ageing. That structure points directly to charred and roasted red meat. Grilled lamb chops and beef skewers are the strongest matches. The tannins sit cleanly against the fat without overpowering leaner cuts. Slow-braised oxtail and a mild tomato-based pasta also work well. The spice notes, cardamom, dried oregano hold their own beside moderately seasoned dishes without clashing.

What you need to know

I’ve never tried Malbec — is this a good starting point for someone who drinks lighter reds?

It is fuller bodied than Pinot Noir or Merlot, but the tannins are rounded rather than gripping. The plum, cherry and spice notes are immediately readable.

Is Malbec dry, or does it have some sweetness?

Fully dry. The ripe fruit aromas can read as sweet on the nose, but there is no residual sugar on the palate.

How does this compare to Trumpeter Reserve Malbec?

This bottle is fruitier and more immediate. Drinkable from the first pour without decanting. The Reserve spends 12 months in French oak versus 7 months here, giving it more structure for formal dinners or short cellaring.

What food pairs best with this wine?

Grilled ribeye, roasted lamb, and beef stew are the strongest matches. It also holds up well beside suya and mildly spiced dishes.

Is this a reliable gift for a casual red wine drinker?

The Trumpeter label scores consistently in the 89–91 point range across multiple vintages, and the Rutini name carries recognition among wine drinkers. It is also vegan certified.

Do I need to decant this before serving?

Not necessary — 15 minutes open in the glass will lift the herbal and spice notes. Serve at 16–18°C.

What should I do if this bottle is out of stock?

Our customer service team can help you find a suitable alternative or source the product where possible.

Where can I buy Trumpeter Malbec 2024 in Nairobi?

Nairobi orders placed before 9 PM qualify for same-day delivery within a 1-hour window. Free delivery on orders above KES 3,000 within Nairobi; nationwide delivery across Kenya within 24–48 hours.

Description

The Uco Valley’s signature grape in its most direct form violet-hued, plum-forward, and spiced with oregano and cardamom from high-altitude vines that make most other entry-level Malbecs taste flat by comparison.

This is the entry point into the Rutini portfolio and the most accessible expression of what the Trumpeter label does across all varieties. Buyers who drink red wine regularly but want something more animated than a generic supermarket Malbec, and buyers choosing a bottle for a group without knowing everyone’s tolerance for tannin, both land here consistently. Ideal for a nyama choma evening in Nairobi — the wine’s dark fruit and spice character is one of the most natural matches for wood-fired and charred meat in any red wine category at this price point.

About The Winery

Felipe Rutini, an Italian agricultural technician, founded Bodega La Rural in Coquimbito, Mendoza, in 1885 making Rutini one of Argentina’s oldest wine estates still in continuous operation. In 1925, the family became the first producer to plant vines in the Uco Valley’s Tupungato sub-region, establishing what is now regarded as Mendoza’s most important high-altitude growing area. Today the estate spans 400 hectares across three Uco Valley sites, with all grapes harvested by hand. Mariano Di Paola has been head winemaker since 1994 and was named by Decanter in 2015 as one of the top 30 winemakers in the world. The Tupungato winery, completed in 2009, installed Argentina’s first optical grape sorter and uses gravity-flow processing throughout. The estate holds certification under the Bodegas de Argentina Sustainability Protocol.
