Tasting notes
Very pale straw with a faint silver rim. The nose is immediate and expressive. Fresh gooseberry and passionfruit lead, followed by a bright thread of lime zest and white grapefruit. Behind those, a cool herbal note carries the varietal character further. A faint mineral trace from the coastal vineyard sits underneath everything, adding a saline dimension that fills out the aromatic picture. The palate entry is dry and precise. The acidity arrives immediately — mouthwatering rather than sharp — carrying the fruit forward with a focused, linear energy. Juicy lime, green apple and gooseberry run through the mid-palate. The body is light and the mouthfeel is clean. There is no residual sugar cushioning the palate. The finish is long for the price point. Wet stone mineral, fresh citrus pith and a trace of dried herb linger for 25 to 30 seconds, fading cleanly without any warmth or weight. The individual parcel fermentation is apparent in the texture: there is a concentration and specificity to the fruit that single tank, bulk-fermented Sauvignon Blanc at this level does not achieve.
Food Pairing
High acidity and a pronounced herbal and citrus profile make this Sauvignon Blanc one of the more food-specific whites on the shelf. Grilled asparagus and green vegetables are the most precise structural match — the wine’s herbaceous character mirrors the flavour of the vegetable directly. Fresh oysters, pan-seared white fish and light crab dishes work alongside a well-chilled glass. The acidity cuts through the fat of rich seafood cleanly without overpowering the flavour. Soft fresh goat’s cheese is a pairing with a long tradition in Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc and works equally well here. For a Nairobi sundowner where something cold and aromatic is the priority, this is the bottle to pour first. Serve at 7 to 9°C and drink young.
What You Need to Know
Is this wine dry or does the fruit make it taste sweet?
Fully dry. The passionfruit and gooseberry aromas are from the grape variety itself, not residual sugar. The palate is clean, precise and closes with a mineral edge and no sweetness.
How does this compare to French Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley?
Both are dry with high acidity and herbal character. New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc generally delivers more tropical fruit intensity — passionfruit, lime, gooseberry — while Loire Valley styles (Sancerre, Pouilly Fumé) tend toward a leaner, more mineral and smoky profile. This Yealands sits in between: tropical fruit intensity with a genuine wet stone mineral finish from the coastal site.
What makes the Awatere Valley different from the rest of Marlborough?
The Awatere Valley is cooler, windier and drier than Wairau Valley. The coastal position of the Seaview Vineyard above Cook Strait adds sea spray influence and a mineral character that warmer, more sheltered Marlborough sites rarely produce. The result is a more precise, higher-acidity style.
What food works best with this wine?
Grilled asparagus, fresh oysters, pan-seared white fish and soft goat’s cheese are the strongest matches. The acidity and herbal character cut through the fat of seafood cleanly. Serve well chilled at 7 to 9°C.
Is Yealands genuinely a sustainable wine producer or is it just marketing?
The certification is third-party verified. Yealands was the world’s first winery to achieve Toitū carboNZero certification from day one in 2008 — before a single bottle was sold. It is also a founding member of International Wineries for Climate Action and was named Champion of Champions at the Green World Awards 2024 across five sustainability categories.
What should I do if this bottle is out of stock?
Our customer service team can help you find a suitable alternative or source the product where possible. Reach out before your event.
How can I get Yealands Sauvignon Blanc delivered in Nairobi?
Nairobi orders placed before 9 PM qualify for same-day delivery, typically completed within a 1-hour window. Free delivery applies to orders above KES 3,000 within Nairobi. Orders outside Nairobi are delivered nationwide across Kenya within 24–48 hours.
Description
New Zealand’s most sustainably certified winery delivers its benchmark Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Coastal vineyard fruit from the cliff-edge Awatere Valley — gooseberry, passionfruit, wet stone mineral and the kind of acidity that makes a glass of cold water seem unnecessary.
Peter Yealands began developing this land in 2002, when many considered Awatere Valley viticulture impossible given the steep slopes, strong winds, cool nights and low rainfall. The winery opened on 8 August 2008 and became the world’s first Toitū carboNZero certified winery from day one — carbon neutral before a single bottle was sold. In 2012, just four years after opening, the Yealands Single Block S1 Sauvignon Blanc was named the world’s best wine at the International Wine Challenge. In 2024, Yealands was named Champion of Champions at the Green World Awards, sweeping five award categories for sustainability initiatives.

About The Winery
Peter Yealands began planting vines on coastal land in the Awatere Valley in 2002 at the age of 54, on terrain that most considered too harsh for viticulture. The Seaview Vineyard winery opened on 8 August 2008 and immediately became the world’s first Toitū carboNZero certified winery from day one — an achievement driven by Yealands’ personal conviction that great wine and environmental responsibility were inseparable. Chief Winemaker Natalie Christensen leads production with experience across France, Spain, the US and New Zealand. The estate spans over 1,000 hectares across the Awatere and Wairau Valleys, with 133 individual vineyard blocks across the Seaview site alone, each fermented separately. The estate continues under the ownership of Marlborough Lines, a community-owned power company.
