Most popular red wine blends in Kenya 2024
Red blends are some of Kenya’s most popular wine purchases year on year. Their popularity is in large part because variation from one year to the next is kept to a minimum through the winemaker’s art. Unlike a varietal wine, where the vintages can taste quite different, with a blend the winemaker can achieve a great degree of consistency from one year to the next. Moreover, top blended reds can sometimes taste even better than their component parts!
At TWB Cellar Limited we offer a wide range of blended red wines from all over the world. Whether your budget is everyday, premium or luxury, we have a red blend to suit your taste. Here, we highlight the five most popular red wine blends in Kenya this year:
Bruce Jack Pinotage Malbec 2020
Bruce Jack wines have been a great hit with TWB Cellar Limited customers since we introduced the range, and the Pinotage Malbec is no exception. Juicy cherry and raspberry flavours follow on from ripe cherry and berry aromas; gentle acidity with a smooth mouthfeel and lightly peppery finish combine to make this a highly drinkable wine. Try it with roasted red meats and spicy foods.
Château Le Bedat Bordeaux Supérieur Rouge 2018
Bordeaux is surely the home of blending, with red wines being made of all or any of six different grape varieties. This example is 75% merlot, 15% cabernet franc and 10% cabernet sauvignon, from older vines on an estate near Saint-Émilion. Smokiness and a touch of vanilla on the nose underscore concentrated ripe blackcurrant and plum flavours; nicely balanced with smooth tannins and moderate acidity, this is a food-friendly wine. Delicious, and great value for money.
Parker Coonawarra Estate Favourite Son Cabernet Malbec 2018
South Australian Bordeaux blends are typically deep and rich with intense ripe fruit flavours developed by the famous terra rossa soils. Blackberry and black cherry flavours are to the fore in this wine, backed up by earthy tones and aromas of dark chocolate. Smooth and powerful, it will pair well with hearty dishes, particularly red meats and game stews.
Heritage Coteaux de Narbonne Rouge 2020
This southern French wine from the stable of Gérard Bertrand is an unoaked blend of equal parts cabernet sauvignon and syrah (shiraz). Aromas of blueberries and violets lead into a well rounded palate with fresh black fruit flavours and soft tannins. An especially good match for pasta dishes, red meats and cheese.
Aliwen Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon-Carménère 2020
Finally to Chile, which produces some truly excellent red wine blends. This example from the Undurraga winery includes carménère; rediscovered in Chile some fifty years ago, this is one of the original Bordeaux blend grapes. The carménère softens the tannins in the blend, as well as imparting cherry and chocolate flavours. This is a great everyday drinking wine and excellent value for money. Pair with grilled meats and tomato-based dishes for a perfect combination.
