Unlike mass market Languedoc blends, which rely on young vines, heavy extraction and new oak to mask simplicity, the Heritage line prioritises old vine material and restrained winemaking. Furthermore, the indigenous yeast fermentation and concrete ageing are techniques employed across Gérard Bertrand’s premium tiers. As a result, the wine achieves a level of savoury complexity and textural honesty that high volume alternatives cannot match. For those comparing Mediterranean red options in Nairobi, this Languedoc blend offers genuine old vine depth and biodynamic credentials at a price point that rivals entry level Châteauneuf du Pape.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby with a garnet rim. The nose is open and herbaceous. Initially, black cherry, raspberry and dried thyme dominate. The garrigue signature is immediate. However, with 30 minutes in the decanter, black olive, smoked meat and a faint lavender note emerge. Furthermore, wet earth, white pepper and a trace of dried rosemary develop over time. On the palate, the wine is medium to full in weight. The entry is supple and fruit driven. Grenache provides a rounded, almost juicy mouthfeel before the Syrah and Mourvèdre add tannin grip through the mid palate. Additionally, the 12 months in concrete and seasoned oak leave a trace of mineral chalk and subtle spice alongside flavours of red plum, blackberry and a hint of liquorice. The finish is medium in length. Dried herbs, crushed stone and a faint saline trace that persists for 25 seconds. This wine drinks well now with air. However, it will soften further through 2027.

Food Pairning

At 13.5% ABV and with moderate tannin, this blend pairs with a wide range of Mediterranean dishes. Grilled lamb chops with rosemary and ratatouille are therefore the strongest matches. The wine’s herbaceous character mirrors the Provençal herbs, while the moderate tannin sits cleanly against charred fat. Additionally, duck confit, cassoulet and aged Manchego work well at the table. The acidity cuts through richness cleanly. For an evening where the occasion calls for something rustic and authentic, this is the bottle that delivers. A casual braai with Mediterranean influence, a midweek dinner with roast meat, or a gathering where the goal is an honest, food friendly red. Decant for 30 minutes before serving.

What You Need to Know:

What does this blend taste like compared to Châteauneuf du Pape?
This shares the Grenache led, herbaceous character of Châteauneuf du Pape. However, the Languedoc gives a wilder, more rustic expression. The tannins are softer and the fruit is more immediate. It is consequently more approachable in youth and significantly less expensive. Think of it as the honest country cousin.
Is this too herbaceous for someone who usually drinks fruity New World reds?
If your reference is ripe, oaky Australian Shiraz, this will feel savoury and earthy. The garrigue herbs, black olive and smoked meat notes are distinctive. It is consequently a different style entirely. Think of it as a food wine for Mediterranean dishes rather than a sipping red.
Should I drink this now or cellar it?
It drinks well now with 30 minutes of decanting. However, the structure will soften and integrate through 2027. The optimal window is therefore 2025 to 2027. Not a long term cellar candidate, but it will improve short term.
What food works best with this blend?
Grilled lamb chops with rosemary, ratatouille and duck confit are ideal. The herbaceous character and moderate tannin suit Mediterranean flavours and rich proteins. Additionally, cassoulet and aged Manchego work for more elaborate occasions.
How does the Heritage line differ from Gérard Bertrand’s Grand Vin tiers?
Heritage focuses on specific historical sites and traditional techniques at accessible price points. The Grand Vin tiers, such as La Clape or Terrasses du Larzac, come from single estates with longer ageing and command premium prices. Heritage consequently offers entry into Bertrand’s philosophy without the investment.
Does the natural cork affect ageing?
Natural cork allows gradual micro oxygenation, which benefits tannin integration over 2 to 3 years. However, it carries a small risk of cork taint. Store horizontally in a cool, dark environment. For a wine with a drinking window to 2028, the closure is traditional and appropriate.
What should I do if this bottle is out of stock?
Our customer service team can help you find a suitable alternative or source the product where possible. Reach out before your event.
How fast can I get this blend delivered in Nairobi?
Nairobi orders placed before 9 PM qualify for same day delivery, typically completed within a 1 hour window. Free delivery applies to orders above KES 3,000 within Nairobi. Orders outside Nairobi are delivered nationwide across Kenya within 24 to 48 hours.

Description

A Grenache led blend from France’s most undervalued wine region, now available in Nairobi, Kenya. The 2021 vintage delivers dark fruit and garrigue herbs through old vine fruit and traditional fermentation.

The 2021 blend assembles three varieties from old hillside vines across the Languedoc. Grenache contributes red plum and warmth from its dominance in the blend. Syrah adds black pepper and structural backbone from its cooler, north facing parcels. Additionally, Mourvèdre brings a savoury, meaty depth and firm tannin that anchors the finish. The combination is deliberate. It mirrors the classic Southern Rhône formula but with Languedoc’s wilder, more rugged expression.

About The Winery

Gérard Bertrand took over his father’s Domaine de Villemajou in 1987 at the age of 22, following his father’s sudden death. Georges Bertrand had been a pioneer of independent winemaking in the Corbières. Gérard expanded the family business into a constellation of 16 estates across the Languedoc Roussillon, encompassing over 850 hectares of vineyards. He has been a leading advocate for biodynamic viticulture in the region since the early 2000s, with a significant portion of his vineyards now certified by Demeter.
The Heritage line was created to showcase specific terroirs and historical vineyard sites across the Languedoc, each cuvée named after a significant date in the region’s wine history. For buyers in Kenya, Gérard Bertrand represents one of the most dynamic and vertically integrated producers in the South of France. A name that carries weight from Corbières to Nairobi.
