Tasting Notes
Pale gold in the glass. The nose leads with lemon cream and melted butter, with a hint of hazelnut behind them. On the palate the wine is generous and creamy, but the acidity is lively, so it stays light on its feet and never turns heavy. Lemon and white stone fruit sit in the middle, with almond and brioche notes from the barrel, and the oak stays in the background. The finish is mineral and carries on rather than dropping away, with hazelnut lingering at the end. What marks this wine out is the tension between a creamy texture and bright acidity.
Food Pairing
The creamy centre and lively acidity point to rich seafood and white meat in a butter or cream sauce. Pan seared scallops, roast chicken with a mushroom cream sauce and lobster in garlic butter are the strongest matches. Grilled prawns or crab from the Kenyan coast with garlic butter follow the same logic, because the acidity cuts through the richness while the hazelnut note echoes the butter. A mushroom risotto or a piece of aged Comté also works. Serve at 12 to 14°C, which is cooler than room temperature but not straight from the fridge. For a Nairobi dinner where the main course is seafood or white meat in a rich sauce, this is a white that can carry the plate.
What You Need to Know:
What does Louis Latour Meursault taste like, and is it dry?
It is dry, with lemon cream and melted butter on the nose and a hint of hazelnut. The acidity is lively, so the wine feels generous without being heavy.
How is Meursault different from Chablis?
Chablis is usually leaner and more mineral. Meursault is rounder and creamier, helped by fermentation in oak barrels.
Should I drink this now or keep it?
It is ready to open now. James Suckling tasted it in 2021 and wrote drink or hold.
What food goes best with this wine?
Scallops, lobster in garlic butter and roast chicken in a cream sauce are the strongest matches. Grilled prawns and mushroom risotto also work.
How cold should I serve it?
Between 12 and 14°C. Take it out of the fridge about 20 minutes before pouring, so the hazelnut and butter notes show.

Description
Village Meursault aged in French oak, scored 93 points by James Suckling. Order online in Nairobi through The Wine Box.
Meursault sits in the Côte de Beaune, where a south-easterly exposure and stony marl soil give the wines their finesse. Louis Latour describes typical Meursault as full and mellow, and says it matures somewhat sooner than its neighbours Puligny and Chassagne. That makes it one of the easier white Burgundies to enjoy without a long wait.
This bottle comes from vines averaging 25 years old, picked by hand and held to an average yield of 45 hectolitres per hectare. The wine ferments in oak barrels with a full malolactic fermentation, then spends 8 to 10 months in barrel, with only 15% of the oak new. Because new oak is kept low, the barrel supports the fruit and does not lead it. James Suckling scored the 2019 at 93 points in July 2021, noting lively acidity that made it lighter on its feet than most wines of the appellation.
For a Nairobi wine lover who wants a clear, well made example of white Burgundy for a dinner or a gift, this is a straightforward place to start. Best suited to anyone who enjoys a creamy, oak touched Chardonnay and wants to try Burgundy’s version.
