Unlike modern Rioja whites, which have shifted to stainless steel and early bottling for freshness, Muga maintains the tradition of new oak fermentation and ageing. Furthermore, the indigenous yeast and absence of fining or filtration are techniques rarely employed for wines at this price point. As a result, the wine achieves a level of texture, complexity and ageing potential that mass-market alternatives cannot match. For those comparing premium white options in Nairobi, this white Rioja offers genuine traditional craft at a price point that rivals entry-level White Burgundy.

Tasting Notes

Pale gold with green highlights. The nose is layered and evolving. Initially, green apple, lemon curd and toasted vanilla dominate. The new oak signature is immediate. However, with 30 minutes in the decanter, white flowers, beeswax and a faint almond-biscuit note emerge from the lees contact. Furthermore, chalk dust, dried herbs and a trace of coconut husk develop over time. On the palate, the wine is full and textural. The entry is creamy. Indigenous yeast fermentation gives a slightly savoury, waxy mouthfeel before the acidity tightens through the mid-palate. Additionally, the 4 months in new French oak leave a trace of baking spice and toasted hazelnut alongside flavours of ripe pear, quince and a hint of ginger. The finish is long and mineral. Crushed oyster shell, lemon peel and a faint saline trace that persists for 40 seconds. This wine drinks well now with air. However, it will integrate further through 2027.

Food Pairing

At 13% ABV and with full body and bright acidity, this white Rioja demands food with weight and richness. Grilled octopus with paprika and roast pork belly with apple are therefore the strongest matches. The wine’s texture mirrors the char and fat, while the acidity cuts through richness cleanly. Additionally, aged Manchego, mushroom risotto and butter-poached lobster work well at the table. The oak and lees character complement dishes with smoke, cream or umami. For a Nairobi evening where the occasion calls for a white wine with genuine presence, this is the bottle that holds its own. A business dinner, a collector’s lunch, or a gathering where the menu leans Spanish. Serve at 10–12°C. Decant 30 minutes before serving.

What You Need to Know:

What does this white Rioja taste like compared to white Burgundy?
This shares the barrel-fermented, lees-aged texture of White Burgundy. However, Viura is less aromatic than Chardonnay, giving more green apple and less peach. The new French oak is similarly prominent. It is consequently more savoury and more structured than most white Burgundy at this price point.
Is this too oaky for someone who usually drinks unoaked whites?
If your reference is crisp, stainless-steel Sauvignon Blanc, this will feel broad and textural. The new oak and lees contact add vanilla, spice and cream. It is consequently a different style entirely. Think of it as a food wine for rich dishes rather than an aperitif.
Should I drink this now or cellar it?
It drinks well now with 30 minutes of decanting. However, the structure and acidity suggest peak drinking from 2026 to 2028. The optimal window is therefore 2025 to 2028. Not a long-term cellar candidate, but it will improve short-term.
What food works best with this white Rioja?
Grilled octopus with paprika, roast pork belly with apple and aged Manchego are ideal. The full body and bright acidity suit rich, smoky and fatty dishes. Additionally, mushroom risotto and butter-poached lobster work for more elaborate occasions.
Why does Muga use new oak for all its white wines?
New French oak adds structure, spice and ageing potential. It is Muga’s defining house style, maintained since 1932. Most other Rioja producers have shifted to stainless steel for freshness and cost. Muga’s commitment is consequently rare and distinctive.
Does the natural cork affect ageing?
Natural cork allows gradual micro-oxygenation, which benefits textural development over 2 to 3 years. However, it carries a small risk of cork taint. Store horizontally in a cool, dark environment. For a wine with a drinking window to 2028, the closure is traditional and appropriate.

How fast can I get this white Rioja delivered in Nairobi?
Nairobi orders placed before 9 PM qualify for same-day delivery, typically completed within a 1-hour window. Free delivery applies to orders above KES 3,000 within Nairobi. Orders outside Nairobi are delivered nationwide across Kenya within 24 to 48 hours.

Description

A barrel-fermented white Rioja from one of the region’s most traditional houses, now available in Nairobi, Kenya. The 2024 vintage delivers texture and citrus precision through Viura and Malvasia aged in oak casks.

Muga is one of the few remaining Rioja houses that ferments and ages all its white wines in new oak. The 2024 follows this tradition. Viura provides the structural backbone — crisp acidity, green apple and citrus. Malvasía contributes aromatic lift and a faint honeyed note. Additionally, the new French oak barrels add spice and texture without the vanilla dominance of American wood. The combination is deliberate. It produces a white Rioja that ages and evolves like a fine white Burgundy rather than fading within a year.
The 2024 growing season in Rioja was warm and dry. As a result, both varieties achieved full phenolic ripeness while the elevation of Rioja Alta preserved acidity. Furthermore, the winemaking team employed indigenous yeast fermentation and 4 months of lees ageing in new French oak with batonnage. These techniques build mouthfeel and complexity. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration. Consequently, it may throw a light sediment with age. This is not a flaw. It is a sign of minimal intervention.

About The Winery

Isaac Muga and Aurora Caño founded Bodegas Muga in 1932 in Haro, the heart of Rioja Alta. The house has remained family-operated for three generations. Their defining principle is oak. All wines, red and white, are fermented and aged in wood. The estate maintains its own cooperage, employing three full-time coopers to craft and repair barrels. This is not nostalgia. It is a production reality that shapes every wine they make.
Muga’s commitment to tradition extends to indigenous yeast, natural clarification through gravity rather than filtration, and extended ageing before release. For buyers in Kenya, Muga represents one of the most authentic and uncompromising sources of traditional Rioja. A name that carries weight from Haro to Nairobi.
